Science with Mr. Huffman
Talk about a timely topic and a teaching moment…the last 9-weeks in 8th grade science we kick off with students exploring the world of microorganisms. Hopefully students will benefit from discussing diseases, epidemics/pandemics, viruses, bacteria, antibiotics, pathogens and even biotechnology, a significant industry here in North Carolina.
Some of the topics we will discuss includes the following: What are some diseases which can be caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses? What are the “red flags” associated with each of these individual pathogens? Explain how viruses are different from bacteria and fungi, and why they are not even considered to be living? Why are some pathogens more dangerous than others and how has science provided us with ways to combat them in order to remain healthy? How is biotechnology being used to affect living organisms? Is overuse of antibiotics leading to so called “super germs”? Should we be concerned with antibiotic resistance and the use of growth hormones in the animals we eat? Should viruses be considered living or non-living and why?
And most certainly we have studied COVID-19 as we all experience this virus induced pandemic. Never before, probably not since the human genome was identified in the 1990s, has science come together globally to uncover and explore an issue. Private industries, educational institutions and governmental agencies from around the world are collaborating to deal with this disease. Science will prevail but at a significant cost. Perhaps one of the most important questions comes when it’s “over” … what have we learned as a global society and how will we respond and change going forward?
Language & Literature with Ms. York
On February 11th & 12th, students completed York's 4th annual Speed Dating with Books event where they were given an opportunity to select a book of their choice to read. This book will be used to complete the Independent Novel Project which will be due in April. Students should be reading daily.
Virtual Learning Updates
Weekly agendas with assignments have been posted on the homepage of my Canvas course. I will email these out to both students and parents weekly; I will also send these out via Remind weekly as well. I have also sent students and parents a calendar with linked agendas and due dates. As I told students, I am trying to keep things simple. I'm trying to be mindful by only assigning a smidge of what we would do in one class setting for the week; I'm also giving students a week's worth of time to complete and submit these assignments. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at dare_york@iss.k12.nc.us.

Individuals & Societies with Mr. Hinkle
Entering the 20th Century in March and April
Students will be working exclusively through Canvas now that we are stuck at home through May 15th. Working through Canvas is not new for the students, as I have used the program throughout the year. If students have questions at all, I will be available through email (should get back to them quickly, as it breaks the monotony of this remote learning experience). Students will be working through modules where they complete one assignment to open the next. I am being very generous with due dates as I feel that this is going to be a stressful time for all of us. I will send daily emails and post daily announcements on Canvas as reminders and to answer frequently asked questions. If students experience technological difficulties please let us know. From a content perspective, students will begin this remote learning experience by reviewing the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. As we enter April, students will learn about the immense economic and technological growth in the US during the Gilded Age. They will also be introduced to social issues caused by our rapid growth. Students will then begin to explore and analyze the attempts of Americans to address our numerous social problems during the Progressive Era. Students will analyze the causes and effects of the Great Depression as well as our government’s response to the disaster as April draws to a close. Students will also complete some personal finance and economics lessons while we work through the Great Depression. Stay safe and find something to smile about if possible.
