Champions for Learning Teachers of Distinction
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
1. Willingness to put in the necessary time - Teaching is not a 7.5 hour day. Teaching, like any other serious profession requires time...time to prepare for class, grade, meet with parents, attend meetings, serve on committees, attend evening meetings, etc...
2. Effective classroom management - They have few behavior problems, build a culture of respect in the classroom that flows both ways and have clear expectations for their students.
3. Positive relationships with other adults - They collaborate with other teachers, informally and formally. Their peers frequently turn to them for for advice or sharing.
4. Capacity for growth - They keep up with the changes in the teaching profession and are open to learning. They also continue to grow their expertise in their content area.
5. Consistent Excellence - Great teachers have good judgement to balance their personal problems with their work in a way that minimizes fluctuations in student performance.
This past week we had another group of teachers who, though new to the teaching profession, are building the foundation to becoming great teachers. Michael Russell, Melissa Mierndorff, Cindy Emanuel and Melissa Stevens attended the District's edCamp session on Wednesday evening. They were joined by teacher mentors Pat Metcalf, Khris Betten-Jutasi and Donna Lang and aspiring administrators Lindsey Simmons and Andrew Ward. Participants chose from a variety of topics to learn from including the disruptive student in classroom management and integrating technology.
Also featured were the culinary delights offered by district high school and technical college students and chefs including our very own dual-enrollment students and Chef Geri.
So whether you are new to teaching, new to our schools or have been practicing your craft for some time, think about where your interests lie in relation to achieving the next level in your career. We have evidence that excellence in teaching is not only achievable but also highly desired among our staff at Lorenzo Walker. Taking an interest in your career and putting the wheels in motion to take it to the next level are within your grasp! Consider reaching out to our successful teachers to find out what they have done and are doing to keep themselves at the top of their game. Congratulations again to all of our teachers who care so much to give their very best!
Happenings
This week we say good bye to Laurie Lattarulo. Laurie is moving with her family to Pennsylvania. We wish her and her family the very best. Laurie's smile, charisma, positivity, and willingness to go the extra mile for students, families and staff will be missed!!
Congratulations to Margot Dagher, who will begin her new role as Secretary to the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction on Monday, December 19th.
- International Cookbooks are coming soon. ELCATE students have built a collection of recipes from their home countries to share this holiday season. After the "sneak peak" we can tell you there are some very yummy recipes!! Cookbooks will be available at the Campus School store starting Wednesday, December 14th while supplies last. The hot holiday cost is only $8.00 and money is going to be used within the ELCATE program. Thank you for your support and Bon Appetit!
- The Sunshine Club is busy planning the Annual Holiday Party and is in need of paper towel rolls for the table centerpieces. If you have any, please place them in Carolyn's Casserly's mailbox.

Looking for a way to sneak some healthy dishes into your holiday meals. Here is one of my favorites. It’s simple, delicious and a crowd favorite. PS- also very cute on the plate because of the coloring

Stressing about the upcoming holidays? Here are some tips from WebMD.com
· Know your spending limit. Lack of money is one of the biggest causes of stress during the holiday season. This year, set a budget, and don't spend more than you've planned. It's okay to tell your child that a certain toy costs too much. Don't buy gifts that you'll spend the rest of the year trying to pay off.
· Give something personal. You can show love and caring with any gift that is meaningful and personal. It doesn't have to cost a lot. Or use words instead of an expensive gift to let people know how important they are to you. Make a phone call or write a note and share your feelings.
· Get organized. Make lists or use an appointment book to keep track of tasks to do and events to attend.
· Share the tasks. You don't have to do everything yourself. Share your "to do" list with others. Spend time with friends and family while you share tasks like decorating, wrapping gifts, and preparing the holiday meal.
· Learn to say no. It's okay to say "no" to events that aren't important to you. This will give you more time to say "yes" to events that you do want to attend.
· Be realistic. Try not to put pressure on yourself to create the perfect holiday for your family. Focus instead on the traditions that make holidays special for you. And remember that just because it's a holiday, family problems don't go away. If you have a hard time being around your relatives, it's okay to set limits on your time at events and visits.
Digital Media/Multimedia Design Students
This past Friday a group of students from our Digital Media/Multimedia Design class first attended Art Basel on South Beach. This four day event is one of the largest art events in the world with everything from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol. After the class went to the Wynwood Walls where graffiti artists have turned warehouses into massive walls of art, students were exposed to media only seen in large markets. Our students gathered several fresh and innovative ideas to add to their industry preparation. Thank you Rick Ponton for ensuring that our students had an opportunity to attend such a smashing event!

Will the real photographer please stand up?
Reminders
Don't forget to bring your old technology that is no longer being used to the Media Center. Anything donated will be used for a “Take-Apart” station in the MakeIt Lab in January where students (or staff!) can dissect technology to see how it’s made and how it works. Ideas include:
· VCRs or even DVD players that are out-of-date
· Defunct cell phones
· Laptops that don’t work anymore or are very out-of-date
· Small household appliances like toasters
· Printers that have the ink cartridges removed
· Anything else that can’t be used anymore
