Here's What We Are Learning
Reading Workshop
This week during reading workshop we turned our attention to narrative nonfiction reading. We began this unit by first remembering the elements of a fiction text, and then used those elements to help us learn about the subject we were reading about. We also looked closely at several texts to see how the author taught us information about history or science as they told the story of the subject. Next week, we will continue to look at narrative nonfiction and review the nonfiction text structures.
The Watcher
A narrative nonfiction text about Jane Goodall.
The Story of Ruby Bridges
This narrative nonfiction taught us about not only, Ruby Bridges, but also about segregation and civil rights.
Young Thomas Edison
We looked at this narrative nonfiction to see how we can connect Thomas Edison's life with the past, present, and future.
Writing Workshop
We have been continuing to work on our informational writing this week. We practiced writing great beginnings and using several topic sentence leads to help us with our paragraphs. This coming week, we will continue to finalize our informational writing. We'll learn how using online platforms can help share our knowledge with our reader even further.
Math Workshop
We began our geometry unit this week. We have been learning and exploring about lines, line segments, rays, parallel lines, and intersecting lines. The students created their own resources for these using pic collage on the iPad. If you have a moment, ask them to share these with you. Next week, we will continue our geometry unit and practice adding multi-digit numbers using landmark numbers.
