Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter
January 5th, 2017
What is going on?
Writing: We will learn how writers focus their stories on a small moment. It helps to keep our stories short, and we can tell about our experiences in a more efficient way. It allows us to give more details on a certain moment in time instead of creating a list of events.
Spelling Words and Grammar: before, don’t, gave, laugh, only, sit, until, white
Our grammar focus will continue to be ending punctuation.
Reading: This week second graders will learn to distinguish the topic from the main idea of a nonfiction text.
Math: This week will finish up our unit on geometry and area with a review and an assessment. Then, we will move back into discussing addition/subtraction with a focus on estimation and reasoning.
Science: This week, we will be studying, sorting and classifying rocks by their texture, color and size. We will observe different rocks and compare their similarities and differences.

***Patsy Sommer Wall Of Champions***
Sommer PTA Healthy Lifestyles is sponsoring our very own STALLION WALL OF CHAMPIONS! Do we have any football or basketball players out there? Perhaps you like to hike or bike. Maybe a dance class or a pickup game of baseball at the park? We need photos of you BEING ACTIVE for our Wall Of Champions! All grades, and all faculty and staff are invited to participate. Photos need to be 5x7 or smaller, and turned in to the marked envelope in the gym during PE or before school starting this week. If you would like your photo returned, it must have your name, teacher, and grade on the back.
Sommer ES will celebrate EGGI week (education go get it) January 16-20, 2017. The theme is DREAM BIG. We are looking for parent volunteers to come and visit with classes about their job. We are only asking for 1-2 hours of your time.
