The Falcon

Fieldstone Middle School * February 2021

Dear Fieldstone Families,

Hopefully everyone has dug out from our most recent blast of winter and enjoyed the diversion of the Super Bowl. We are grateful to our custodial and maintenance staff members who continue to focus on keeping our facilities safe and clean while also managing to remove the snow and ice that this winter has delivered.

We are weathering these months by continuing to stay engaged in challenging and relevant learning. As evidenced by the authenticity of learning contexts, our teachers continue to focus on integrating experiences across content areas while considering the skills necessary for success in today's world. The need for resiliency and flexibility have never been more apparent, and each and every day we see evidence of the ability of all members of our school community to meet the challenges of our currrent school year.

We are looking forward to our annual observance of P.S. I Love You Day on 2/12. This year's theme will be "Together We Will Rise." Students and staff are encouraged to wear purple on Friday to stand up against bullying and foster an environment of kindness and inclusion.

As always, if we can be of assistance to you or your family, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Please see below for additional topics of interest and the many reasons why it's great to be a Falcon.

All the best,

Gina McCormack

A Virtual Meeting with a Paleontologist

Big picture
After reading extensively about dinosaurs, a group of Ms. Golden's language arts students recently had the opportunity to meet with a paleontologist, Dr. Andy Farke. Dr. Farke displayed images of fossils, shared his experience with excavating and assembling fossils to build a dinosaur, and answered students' thoughtful questions.

Ditch the Vape - A Campaign for Vaping Prevention

Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 benefited from presentations on the dangers of vaping during recent Falcon Friday meetings. We are grateful to FMS graduate Aria Chalileh who provided compelling information regarding the hazards surrounding the use of these substances. Aria, who is a senior at Pascack Hills High School, has worked extensively with the Bergen County Prevention Coalition to develop an impactful experience for students while fulfilling requirements for her Girl Scout Gold Award. We are very grateful for her commitment to sharing this important message.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and our library is well stocked with titles to support this important observance. The lists below from Mrs. Sarappo have been designed with the interests of readers in grades 5-6 and grades 7-8 in mind. Many of these books are part of our school library collection or can be accessed through the Bergen County Library System. Students can request books from the school library through the IMC Book Request Form.

FMS Celebrated La Chandeleur

When a snow day and Groundhog's Day coincided, our French students observed a sweet, French holiday with Mrs. Leon. This holiday is called La Chandeleur and is celebrated with a favorite French treat- crêpes! On this day, it is a tradition to flip crêpes while holding a gold coin in one hand for good luck.

Over 70 French students chose to participate in celebrating this cultural fête by making crêpes of their own!
