Notes From the Front Desk

Absences

If your student needs to be absent from school, please send a written note when they return. Absences cannot be excused in advance. The note needs to include the following:

Student’s first name, not initials or nicknames
Student’s last name
Homeroom Teacher’s name
Parent’s name
Parent’s signature
Parent’s phone number

By providing the above information, we are certain to give your child the credit for the note.

Please do not send absence notices to the McGown@cfisd.net email address.

Mid-Year GT Screening

Current McGown students in Grades 1-5 are eligible for Gifted and Talented Screening. Referrals are due by November 30, 2022 for the mid-year testing cycle occurring in January and February 2023. This opportunity applies only to students who have not participated in GT screening this school year.

Words from the Library

Birthday Book Club launched last month. Please see the attached flyer to participate. Return both flyer and receipt of purchase (stapled) to your child's homeroom teacher.

Author Visit

Second- fifth grade have an upcoming author visit with Steve Swinburne on October 12. Please make sure to return the blue order forms for Mr. Swinburne's books. They will be signed by the author. If you have not had a chance to place an order on SchoolCash, please do so as soon as possible. Please attach your SchoolCash receipt to the blue order form. We have also attached the order form if you need a new copy.

Book Character Pumpkins

McGown Elementary Library is hosting a "Pumpkin Extravaganza" from October 17th-

Nov 1st. Why the Library? This will be a BOOK CHARACTER extravaganza. Use a little fabric, a little paint, and other craft supplies to transform an ordinary *craft* pumpkin into your favorite character from a book! Use a small, medium, or large craft pumpkin. The choice is yours! Please see the flyer here. (attached)

Birthday Marquee Announcements

We have two great ways to celebrate birthdays at McGown. One option is to join the Birthday Book Club in the library. See the flyer in the library section of our newsletter. A second option is to have your child's name announced on the marquee during the week of their birthday. For both options you will need to print the flyer along with your receipt from school cash and turn them in to your child's teacher.

Counselors' Corner

Comprehensive School Counseling Program Needs Assessment

Each year, the Comprehensive School Counseling Program at McGown will conduct a needs assessment for the purpose of seeking input on topics and prioritizing counseling services that will be delivered to students during the school year.

The Professional School Counselors deliver guidance curriculum lessons, small groups, individual planning meetings, and other counseling activities to all students, addressing the following topics:

1) Positive self-concept, effective behaviors, etc.

2) Constructive interactions, appropriate communication skills with others, development of relationships, etc.
3) Wellness practices, positive coping skills, assertiveness skills necessary for personal protection, etc.
4) Motivation to succeed in personal endeavors, career exploration, awareness of post-secondary education, etc.
