NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
January 24, 2020
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
You are your child’s most important teacher. As parent-teacher conferences approach, it is very important that we are able to hear your thoughts and concerns about your child’s progress in school. It’s also very important for your child’s teacher be able to communicate with you what they’re seeing in the classroom. Please be sure to sign up for a conference on Tuesday, February 11th, Thursday, February 13th or Wednesday, February 19th to engage in this vital conversation.
The sign-ups for parent-teacher conferences open this Sunday morning, January 26th at 6:00 am. They will remain open until Sunday, February 9th at 11:00 pm. Please sign in to HelpAtSchool to sign up for a 20-minute time with your child’s classroom teacher. If your child has an IEP (individualized education plan/special education), please also sign up for an additional 20-minute spot with your child’s special education teacher. If you have questions, please call Sheila in the main office at 720-561-4800 or your child’s teacher.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Who's Who on the NES Staff?
Please join me in welcoming our newest staff members to NES.
Jonathan Geilhufe, Second Grade (Mr. Geilhufe is filling in for Ms. Ness this semester as she is on maternity leave)
Several years ago I moved from California to Colorado with my family to pursue a career in education. I was a teacher candidate in a 5th-grade classroom at Louisville Elementary and completed the Teacher Prep Program at Friends School in Boulder. I am also close to finishing my masters in Learning, Developmental, and Family Sciences at CU Denver. This year I’ve had the opportunity to teach in preschool, kindergarten, Special Education, 3rd, and 5th-grade at Nederland Elementary.
Prior to moving to Colorado, I was a marketing director at a digital agency in San Francisco that supported online education programs. I also taught for a year and a half in Shanghai, China.
I have a second-grade son and a fourth-grade daughter at Flatirons Elementary. I am a passionate and dedicated teacher and absolutely love working with second graders.
In my spare time, I love exploring Colorado with my family, running, and camping.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES ( Jan 21-24, 20220)
In honor of ML King, Jr, primary grades discussed the idea of fairness and injustice. They were asked to notice when others are not being valued, included, or are unable to get their needs met. Like MLK, students considered how they could take action to correct the situation by building people up instead of putting them down, taking turns, inviting others to join in, and sharing resources. 2nd - 5th graders practiced crafting genuine apologies that repair a damaged relationship.
The steps include --
1. Using a sincere tone of voice,
2. Saying "I'm sorry" for the specific thing you said or did,
3. Demonstrating you understand how the other person feels,
4. Sharing how you will do things differently next time, and
5. Taking action steps (or asking how you can) make things right with them.
