El Dorado Monday Memo
Week 9 October 14th, 2019
#ToroFamily
And just like that, we are in 2nd quarter. I cannot believe how quickly the 1st quarter went by. Just a reminder that the grading window for 1st quarter grades closes Tues night at midnight. Report cards will be mailed home to students on Fri.
We have another Minimum Day this week, on Thursday. Each department/PLC will be working on reviewing their data/student work/grades, reflecting, and planning for the upcoming quarter. Department Chairs: If we have not already talked with you, we will be checking in early this week to help develop your time on Thursday. We have something every day this week so please be sure to check below for updates and have a great week!
Updates for the week...
Monday, 10/14 3:30: Soccer Playoffs: We are hosting the MS Soccer Playoffs in which our B Team will be playing in at 3:30. This has always been and especially this year a great community-building event, with students, families, community members, etc all coming out to support their school. I would highly encourage you to come out and support our players.
Tuesday, 10/15 5:30: ELAC Meeting: Come and join us for our 2nd ELAC meeting of the year! All are welcome.
Wednesday, 10/16 1:00-3:00: Department/PLC Meetings: We will be continue our conversation from last week around Focus Note Taking and designing our progress charts in addition to any other items for your department.
Wednesday, 10/16 8-9 a.m. & 5-6 p.m. Parent University Night: Our first Parent U night of the year will be on supporting parents with Homelink and Study Skills for their students. Please share this info with your students (see slide here) and encourage them to tell their parents to come. If you would like to help and support our parents and students, please let us know.
Wednesday, 10/16 6:30: PFC Meeting: We are still looking for a teacher rep for PFC. This is a vital role to advocate for our needs on campus, communicate all the amazingness you all are doing to our parents, and to share back with staff all that PFC is doing. If you are interested, you only have to give up one night a month, let me know.
Thursday, 10/17: Great Shakeout: We will be participating in the Great Shakeout on Thursday. We will send out our earthquake procedures in a separate email with the time/period we will be conducting the drill.
Thursday, 10/17: Minimum Day Data Review: Minimum Day Bell Schedule can be found here. We will be meeting in our department/PLCs and reviewing our student work, data, and grades from Q1 starting at 12:30. Locations TBD.
Saturday 10/19: EDMS Family Fun Walk: Come and join our 2nd annual Family Fun Walk. Last year we had an amazing turnout...lets make it even better this year. Even if you didn't turn in a form, feel free to show up and walk with us.
By now you should have completed your Mandated Training. There has been some discrepancies about how many trainings were assigned and we are waiting to hear an official word about it.

This Week in AVID
This Week in AVID October 14, 2019
This week we have been revisiting how to coach our students to develop better critical reading strategies. Here are some “writing in the margins” strategies that gradually teach students how to improve their metacognition skills. Teachers may use one lens at a time or align one or two of the lens to a particular reading assignment. Another great idea is to form groups and have each student take a role and mark the text accordingly. Afterwards, they meet to discover how their partners reacted.

Talk to students about respect. Ask them, how do we show respect for others? And for ourselves? Tell students that we do not have to like someone or agree with their choices, but we still need to be respectful. No one should be put down, called names or teased because of who they are, what they look like, the color of their skin, who they love, or how they worship. Every student deserves a safe school. Remind students that they have power and their daily choices either help or hinder efforts to make El Dorado a safe and supportive environment.
