What's Happening ?? !!
~ Hawley Newsletter ~ March 11, 2018 ~
From the Desk of Mr. Moretti
Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians,
WOW, I now understand what my grandmother meant when she used to say, "Crazy March!" I hope that you all are well and have enjoyed April Break in March ;0)
Here's What (I think) is Happening at Hawley (or at least, last I checked).......
- Spirit Daze: NO Spirit Day Monday! I think we are going to push all Spirit Days off a little bit. We will use Monday to get students back into a routine and settled. Staff and committees will then have time to meet and map out all that needs to be rescheduled (Read Across America, Dr. Suess's birthday celebration, Sports Day, Buddy Activities, etc.).
- PTA Book Fair is another event to reschedule. We are going to try to have Monday be the viewing/wish list day. Classes will still shop during their scheduled library, and we will reschedule Monday's classes' buying day (and then communicate that to parents).
- STEAM Night: This fun evening will be here before you know it (April 26). This is a great opportunity to share a talent and interest while getting involved. Any parent/guardian or relative that has a STEAM related activity that they would consider presenting this evening, please contact Amy Hiruo at hiruoa@newtown.k12.ct.us
- Mr. Michlovitz is Tweeting PE Happenings (including most recently Jump Rope for Heart). I encourage those that Tweet to follow (@HawleyPhysEd)
- The unexpected days off and the rescheduling of many events have brought to mind that an email reminder in this fast-paced world would be beneficial. It is school and District practice that staff will respond to emails within 24 hours. When school is not in session (evenings, weekends, vacations, and school closings) it should not be expected that staff is monitoring their email and responses will occur upon return to school. I just didn't want people not getting responses and wondering why. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Hawley Book Swap
Book Swap & Donation
Hawley Loves to Read week will take place from April 9th-13th. Although that may seem like a long way off, it will actually be here before we know it. I am really excited about Tuesday, April 10th in particular and wanted to give you a head’s up so you can plan/prepare for it.
On Tuesday, April 10th we are going to have our 3rd annual Hawley Book Swap and Book Donation in the Multi-Purpose room. On this day, classes will come together in the MPR to pick out previously-owned books, much in the format of the book fair. Students will be able to label their “new” book and bring it home in celebration of all things reading!
To make this event such a success, we are asking for your help:
In your Spring Cleaning efforts, please set aside any of your gently used books that you would like to donate. (Please be sure donated books are clean from markings or torn/ripped pages.) All gently used books can be dropped off in the boxes at the front of the school or on the stage in the Multipurpose room anytime leading up to Literacy Week (April 9th-13th). Books will then be sorted by grade level and placed on tables for student selection the day of the book swap. All remaining books will be donated to a nearby school with limited resources.
Questions/concerns: don’t hesitate to write me an email, wasleys@newtown.k12.ct.us. Thanks so much for your support of this event and all your continued support of library events!!
Pennies For Patients: Nervous Days Off will impact donation momentum.....
Hawley School’s Student Council will be sponsoring a fundraiser called “Pennies for Patients” from March 5-March 23, 2018. During this time, your child can collect spare change to fill the box that he or she will bring home on Monday. Once your child has filled the container, it can be returned to school. The box can be filled and brought to school as many times as necessary over the course of the fundraiser. If you prefer, online donations can be made by using this link: http://events.lls.org/pages/ctwhv/HawleyElementarySchool-2018 . Student Council has set a goal of raising $2,000! If Hawley School reaches its goal, every student will earn an extra recess! The class with the highest total will also receive a reward.
“Pennies for Patients” is a program run by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that helps to raise funds for life-saving cancer research. All of the change collected during this fundraiser goes toward treatments and cures for blood cancers. By donating spare change, students are helping to raise money to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s diseases, and myeloma.
Thank you for helping to support such a worthy cause. If you have any questions, please contact Jenna Connors, Lead Teacher, at connorsj@newtown.k12.ct.us.

Out of the Mouths of Babes........
Mr. M approached students playing at recess.
"What a beautiful day," Mr. M said.
"Love It. Yes. This is the best. Been waiting for the nice weather." responded the students
"Enjoy it, snow coming," added Mr. M
To which a student screamed, "I think that groundhog is more of a Cuckoo Bird."
