Digital Literacy...at home

Hello Davis Family. I hope that everyone is doing well and is making the best of this interesting times. I know that you have been given information from the district and you will be seeing more information in the near future, but I just wanted to jump in here and provide a little bit of fun and maybe a bit of knowledge as well (gasp!).

Over the next 2 weeks I will be posting some videos, maybe some links, maybe even a Newsela article (no- you don't have to take the quiz) that I think are interesting and not just something for you to do to pass the time. Tomorrow, look for my first video. I will be reading live on Twitter @MrNeft starting at 10:30am. Hope to see you there.

In the meantime Classlink still works and feel free to wow your families with how well you can type or show off your Coding abilities in Code Studio.

Happy New Year

Welcome back. This new decade brings good cheer to Digital Literacy. First, the 3d Printer is back and running so our 5th grade 3d design projects can get back on track. Additionally, the Hour of Code has been immensely popular and we are having a great time learning how to to program through Code.org. Along those lines, as a reminder, the Code Club meets on Day 3 during recess for 4th and 5th graders who signed up.

In addition to that, the TV studio got an upgrade and is working smoothly again after some issues at the end of last year.

Finally, we now have a class pet; A Betta fish named Starbuck. Pictures will be coming soon.

Veterans Day

For Veteran’s Day, we feel it is our duty to honor and remember those who serve in the military. Every year I try to do my part by putting together a video for the Davis Community of any of our family who have served. If you have a relative (past or present) in any branch of the armed services then we ask you to please respond to this from by Monday October 28th

Click here for the form to submit the information.

Thank you!

Welcome to my online newsletter. I will be updating monthly with what is happening in Digital Literacy and if there is anything that needs to be highlighted or announced. Currently, we are just getting adjusted back to school and reviewing a lot of concepts from last year. We are focusing on our keyboarding skills and Google Docs. October will bring less review and introduce more new concepts to each grade level.

Typing Agent

Students will hone typing skills as apart of the Digital Literacy curriculum There are also sections to help with Digital Citizenship, coding, and even foreign language.

Digital Citizenship

One of the most important concepts that we discuss in Digital Literacy is how to be a good Digital Citizen. This includes not only staying safe online but also cyberbullying, downloading, social media, copyrights and plagiarism, proper device usage, and a little bit of common sense thrown in there as well.

3d Printing

Big picture

3d Printing

The 3d Printer is hard at work. In 5th grade students design their own creations using Tinkercad and then we bring them to life on the 3d Printer. We are very lucky to be able to have this here at Davis!

DATV

The Davis Morning News is up and running again and is proud to say that it is the highest rated tv show on DATV. Seriously though, Davis 5th graders are doing a great job of learning the ins and outs of how to run a news program including writing a script, working a teleprompter, learning how a tricaster works, and of course being on the air.
