Naiades Oncology Rowing

Cancer Survivors Rowing for Recovery

To the Naiades Oncology Rowing Supporters, Sponsors, and Partners.

Naiades Oncology Rowing is an important aspect of life for many of us. It gives us an opportunity to socialize, collaborate, exercise with individuals who share the cancer experience, but most importantly, it offers a unique way to heal.

We want to take a moment to thank all our business supporters who through their generosity make our rowing club possible. Especially, we want to mention our small business supporters who need your continued support during these trying times. Here are a list of the businesses both large and small who have supported us in the past: http://www.naiadesoncologyrowing.com/page-8-3.html

Summer Training Session

Per US Rowing: "No team boats should be allowed until social distancing guidelines are lifted."

Due to this determination, we do not know when we will be able to start team boats, but are monitoring the situation closely. Until such time, the Program Committee has devised a way to keep you fit and in touch through a virtual workout program and will be adding outdoor workouts weather permitting. The workout schedule is designed to prepare you for the on-the-water schedule of Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:45pm to 7:30pm.

Weather dependent, we offer either an outside work-out or a Zoom workout. Each Monday you will be notified of the weeks workout plan, plus it will be on the web page calendar. You will want to have handy light weights, a towel and a mat for the workout. The last 20 minutes will be devoted to Yoga.

We are hoping to add our other outdoor activities weekly while respecting social distancing guidelines. If you are interested in joining our workouts please please email: program@naiadesoncologyrowing.com to guarantee you receive Monday's notice.

Improving Your Mental Toughness for Rowing

Our mind and body share a powerful connection. Attitude is pretty much everything. We move in the direction of what we think and feel. Your quality of mental strength or grit is very important for your rowing success.

First of all, we do not wake up mentally strong, we become mentally strong. Do you visualize how you want to perform before entering the water either individually or with your team? The more you visualize, the more effective you will be. Does you mind wander? Keep your mind on the present. If you mind shifts continually train yourself in bringing it back to the present. Be mindful in paying attention to what is. Meditation can help in developing your focus skills.

Second, not forgetting, your mind is a muscle that can be strengthened. Become a repeated success thinker in order to build and breed your own confidence. Always think in the positive. Third, learn how to continually channel and maintain your energy through breathing exercises. Controlling your breathing will help you effectively oxygenate your body and keep you calm should anxieties arise. It enhances your rowing experience when you can combine all three of these components into your rowing prep routine in whatever way works best for you.

The Rower's Rudder (Q&A):

How would an individual with lymphedema seek out an exercise program to help with their symptoms?: First and foremost, referral and consultation with a certified physical or occupational therapist is recommended for development of a lymphatic exercise program. Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, RNs and Massage Therapists are also eligible to go on for further training and become qualified as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) specializing in decompression techniques and other treatment modalities. A helpful video on how to "Find a Lymphedema Therapist" can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkYMZFLWzlI

Is there a helpful resource where an individual could locate a professional with CLT credentials?: Yes, most often schools providing CLT training offer therapists directories. For example, Klose Training & Certification offers this CLT locator by zip code: https://lymphaticnetwork.org/living-with-lymphedema/find-a-lymphedema-therapist

What are the best types of exercise to aid in the prevention and treatment of lymphedema?:

Studies have found that various types of exercise help in the prevention and treatment of lymphedema. However, they have identified that one of the best types of exercise is deep abdominal breathing which stimulates the diaphragm to increase the effectiveness of the lymphatic system pumping resulting in the re-distribution of lymphatic fluid throughout the rest of the body. In addition, aerobic exercise, such as rowing or swimming, promotes increased range of motion. The resistive movement against the water caused by the aerobic exercise is found to provide compression, massage, relaxation and comfort benefits for lymphatic issues.

How much exercise is helpful in the prevention and treatment of lymphedema? It is important to start a lymphedema exercise program slowly; gradually increasing time and intensity of the exercise under the supervision of a licensed health professional. An individual's musculature should be allowed to relax between each individual exercise. Since the pump activity of the exercise compresses the lymph vessels which lie between muscles and the relaxation phase of the individual exercise allows the extra lymphatic fluid to shift outward and be redistributed. In addition, the relaxation phase should last at least as long as the time spent on each individual exercise.
