Replication
Protists and Bacteria
Protist Replication
Protists can reproduce through asexual or sexual reproduction.
Conjugation- the exchange of two cells genetic material without fusion, followed by mitosis
- Asexual Cell Division- through mitosis they reproduce quickly, but it limits genetic diversity
Conjugation- the exchange of two cells genetic material without fusion, followed by mitosis
- Sexual Reproduction-altering between diploid and haploid phases
When two spores get close to each other they fuse together to form one diploid cell. That cell then goes through meiosis to form a haploid cell and the cycle is repeated.
Bacteria Replication
Asexual- Bacteria go through binary fission in which the bacterial cells divide into 2 cells that look the same as the original cell.
Sexual- Use conjugation
Bacteria can reproduce every 20 minutes.
Replication Similarities and Differences
Both:
- Reproduce asexually (Protist can also reproduce sexually)
- Reproduce through mitosis
- Use conjugation
- Reproduce every 20 minutes
- Use binary fission
Protists:
- Reproduce through meiosis or mitosis
- Have spores
