Weekly Update for Ben Milam Families
The Milam Way
Every child deserves our best! That is THE MILAM WAY!
Dear Ben Milam Families,
Did you know...
- People who read books - fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose - for as little as 30 minutes a day over several years were living an average of two years longer than people who didn't read anything at all (Reader's Digest).
- Students who scored 90% better than their peers on reading tests, read for more than 20 minutes a day – exposing them to 1.8 million words a year.
- Students who scored at fifty percentile, read on average only 4.6 minutes a day – exposing them to 282,000 words per year.
Share your love of reading by reading with your children every night.

Reading Aloud to Children
Please take a few minutes to review the information about the importance of reading aloud to children in the link below. Our goal is for each of our students to read for a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes each day and to have someone read to them for an additional 15 to 20 minutes each day.
Scholastic Book Orders
Book orders are due this Friday. Please purchase at least one book for each child. The website is scholastic.com/bookclubs and our code is P6QHH. Thank you! I will be ordering a few books myself.
Breakfast Schedule for 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students
Third, fourth and fifth grade students will have breakfast from 7:15 - 7:45 am (instead of 7:30 - 8:00) beginning tomorrow, Thursday, January 24, 2019. Please make sure your children are at school early enough to enjoy their breakfast. Thank you!
Canned Food Drive Update
With your help, we were able to reach our goal of collecting 1,000 cans of food during our community service project. We had planned to donate all of the cans to the North Texas Food Bank, but, we are having difficulty having them pick up the donation. We have decided to donate the food to the Family Gateway Center located in downtown Dallas. We communicated with them and they are very appreciative of this donation. I just wanted to keep you informed since a change was made regarding the agency that we would be supporting.
School-wide Behavior Plan
All classes are following the school-wide behavior plan shown below. Please review the plan and ask your children to explain it to you on a regular basis. Thank you for your support with our behavior plan.
