The Red Wolf
One of Nature's Rarest Canids!
Why is the Red Wolf endangered?
The Red Wolf has been endangered for a very long time. The Red Wolf population started dying out very quickly in the early 20th century. In 70 years, the Red Wolf's habitat had shrunk from a large portion of southeastern North America to small parts of Louisiana and Texas. In 1980, every known Red Wolf was taken into captivity in a last ditch effort to save the species. Currently, Red Wolves only exist in the Alligator River Natural Wildlife Refuge, located on North Carolina's coast.
What caused the Red Wolf to go extinct in the wild? We did. Human activity and predator control programs have caused the amount of suitable habitat for the Red Wolf to decrease dramatically.
