Blanket Exercise - École OLPH
Dear Parents,
You are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at École OLPH in Sherwood Park on Tuesday, June 4 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy.
Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.
Please RSVP by Monday, June 3 by filling out the Google Form below.

Resiliency
Hi Parents!
Last week, myself and some other FWWs presented to EICS parents on resiliency and helping children build the best capacity to cope with stress and to be able to reframe difficulties from something negative and difficult to something positive and worthwhile. We highlighted a bunch of strategies but I just wanted to share one of them that stood out for me.
We, as human beings, have the tendency to focus on the negatives. I don't know about you, but I could have 99 good things happen to me in one day with ONE negative thing, my mind will focus on the negative. Why are we created this way? There are probably a million reasons but for the purpose of this blurb, I will rest with God, His plan for us and what He wants us to learn and grow to be: Gorgeously human, flawed but fabulous, perfectly imperfect. Through these imperfections, He gently understands we will make mistakes but He also lovingly wants us to learn and grow from them.
One way we grow is how we perceive difficulty and this is through a mindset. Have you ever heard your child or a loved one say "I can't do this" or "I always make mistakes" or "I never do anything right" or "I give up"? These are examples of cognitive thinking traps. How do we change them? One of the examples is by simply challenging those thoughts with developing a growth mindset. Here are some examples of what you can say to challenge these thoughts.
What about your children and their negative thinking traps? With their developing brain, they will need a loving relationship to help them challenge these thoughts. Also, to build this habit, it takes time, practice, time, practice, and lots of consistent patience (for yourself and your child!)
If you are interested in knowing more about building resiliency for your yourself and your children, feel free to contact me at simone.moniz@eics.ab.ca.
Have a blessed day!
Mme Simone Moniz
Indigenous Land Acknowledgment!
A territorial or land acknowledgement is an act of reconciliation that involves making a statement recognizing the traditional territory of the Indigenous people who called the land home before the arrival of settlers, and in many cases still do call it home.

Linking Generations
Dear 2019-2020 School Partners,
Linking Generations is preparing for our upcoming 2019-2020 Volunteer Grandparent Program. I must share with you, that I am hearing many wonderful comments within the schools and within our community about this wonderful Intergenerational Program and the benefits to our teachers and students. I know that you and your teachers will enjoy the senior volunteer placements this fall.
Recruiting individuals to volunteer sometimes can be a bit difficult. If you could please insert a small notice in your school newsletters about our upcoming program in your school this fall, that would be wonderful. It will give parents a heads up about our program, however it may also assist us in recruiting our senior volunteers. I have included a small write that you may wish to use, along with Linking Generations logo ; if needed. Please feel free to make changes if necessary.
LINKING GENERATIONS will introduce The Volunteer Grandparent program at ( insert your school name) this fall! In readiness for this exciting program, Linking Generations will begin recruiting Senior Volunteers in May and June, who wish to connect with our students in our school classrooms. Seniors volunteers will enjoy the chance to share skills, knowledge & experience, while providing a valuable community service. The Linking Generations Volunteer Grandparent Program will work in partnership with Elk Island School Board and local groups to develop, place & support volunteers within the framework of the Grandparent Program. If you or a Senior Family member is interested in volunteering, please email Debbie Sinclair; Executive Director; Linking Generations at linkgendebbie@telus.net or check out Linking Generations website at www.linkinggenerations.ca
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Debbie Sinclair

Sacraments Dates
As the dates get closer for the celebration of the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation get closer, I have received a number of phone calls from parents who are concerned because they have “missed the chance to register their child.”
The preparation time for these sacraments is complete for this 2018-2019 year BUT you have NOT “missed” the chance for your child to celebrate these sacraments.
Please join us in the fall of 2019 ~ I promise they will not be the only child in grade 3 or 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion nor will they be the only child older than grade 6 preparing for Confirmation!
Nothing has been “missed” and what has been gained is the opportunity to prepare your child in a way that is unrushed and meaningful for both of you.
Please watch the Parish website at www.olph.ca under sacraments for our updates on sacrament information.
The registration dates in the fall are Monday, September 23 at 7:00pm at OLPH Parish for First Reconciliation and First Communion and Monday September 30 at 7:00pm at OLPH Parish for Confirmation.
We look forward to meeting you and your children in the fall! If you have any question please contact Raylene at 780-467-5470 or at ryuzyk@olph.ca.

FundScrip Fundraising
Dear Parents,
OLPH School Council has been using FundScrip for the last 5 years as one of the schools main fundraisers.
FundScrip, is a fundraising program that lets you raise funds simply by purchasing gift cards for your everyday shopping (i.e. groceries, gas, gifts and household items). When you purchase a $100 grocery gift card, you receive the $100 card, but in addition, a percentage is donated to our fundraising campaign. It’s like getting free money, where the only catch is you have to change your method of payment to using gift cards!
Please visit https://www.fundscrip.com/ to place your on-line order(s). To print off a paper order form, please click on the attached document below.
How to Support our École OLPH FundScrip Group
