Basic Functions of Clothing

By: Katie Junker

Clothing insulates you in the cold and keeps the sun from burning you in the heat. Special clothes can protect people from harm such as sports gear, firefighter gear, and construction gear. Workers in hospitals use sanitary clothing to prevent the flow of germs.

Clothing can identify people by members of a group. Uniforms make people recognize you instantly by your job or what team you play on.

Clothing provides modesty to properly cover the body with clothes. Modesty varies for the occasion such as bathing suits are good for the beach but not for school or work.

People use clothing to enhance their appearance and attract attention. People adorn their body with tattoos and jewelry.

Clothing can show a person's status or rank. Leaders of a marching band may wear hats or royalty might wear crowns. Members of the military wear insignias to indicate rank.
