Spring ISD celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Spring ISD is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15), held each year to honor the cultures and contributions of individuals who identify as Hispanic or Latino/Latina/Latinx.
This observance began in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan’s administration as a way to celebrate American descendants of Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. The celebration starts mid-month because Sept. 15 marks the independence anniversary of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. It is followed by Mexico's Independence Day on Sept. 16 and Chile's on Sept. 18.
Spring ISD is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by featuring staff members, students, and campuses on our social media pages. Anyone interested in sharing more about their Hispanic/Latino culture and customs can participate in our district video campaign. Here’s how to participate:
Our video series will consist of one- to two-minute videos that feature Spring ISD students and staff sharing details about their Hispanic/Latino cultures, customs, and experiences. Each segment will be shot in the Communications Studio located in the Gordon M. Anderson Administration Building, 16717 Ella Blvd. Anyone interested in participating can reach out to our Bilingual Communications Specialist, Nathalie Ramirez, at cramir4@springisd.org.
Additionally, if your campus is doing something special to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, reach out to us! We want to highlight any campus events and celebrations in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Nominations and/or inquiries can be sent to our Bilingual Communications Specialist, Nathalie Ramirez, at cramir4@springisd.org.
Student card campaign to bring appreciation to healthcare heroes
As healthcare workers across the region and state face ongoing challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Spring ISD students are being asked to share their support by creating cards for the Celebration of Healthcare Heroes Campaign.
The effort is in support of St. Luke’s Health staff members who are working on the frontlines of the pandemic. The hospital system’s Chief Executive Officer said the card campaign comes at a time when many in the industry are experiencing exhaustion and burnout, 18 months into the fight against COVID-19.
“As our nurses and caregivers face this fourth — and what threatens to be the most impactful — surge of COVID-19 cases, we see and feel their exhaustion,” T. Douglas Lawson, Ph.D said. “Our providers are working to deliver exceptional care to the sickest members of our communities, and some days, they have little left for themselves or their own families. For all that they give to all of us, I would like to ask for your help to give something back to them.”
Spring ISD is encouraging students to create cards featuring pictures, notes, or whatever else could put a smile on the faces of these local caregivers.
“As a district, we are always grateful for the tireless efforts of our healthcare heroes throughout the Houston area,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson. “But during this especially difficult time, it is imperative that we let them know that we are here in support of them and that we see their incredible efforts. I hope that the words of encouragement and gratitude from our Spring ISD students can provide a bright moment in their day.”
Campuses can collect cards and send via interoffice mail to the PVA Department, attention Joe Clark, by Tuesday, Sept. 28.
