Big picture

Thank you to Annette, Gary, Zella and Marilyn
for tabling our Bat Adoption Program during The Owl Festival with Humane Indiana Wildlife

Bat Adoption Program Great Success!

The Bat Adoption Program has raised (net) $825.00 during the month of October for PCC's Bat Monitoring and Habitat work. Special thanks to the Thrivent Financial $250 gift card grant for getting this program started with seed money.

The Adoption program is available online now too! Let your family and friends know about it, the program makes a great holiday gift. Recipients receive a plush bat with adoption paper, tips for supporting bats in their own yards and a monthly newsletter The Chiroptera Monthly about bats in NWI, PCC's work with them and bats around the world.

Online subscribers add $4.00 to cover handling and shipping costs.

Busting for Bats!

The Discovery Trackers 4-H Club along with the South Shore Ghostbusters raised $833 for PCC's Bat Monitoring and Habitat project during the October 12 "Breakfast with the Ghostbusters". Special thanks to the Tracker 4-H club for doing so many fundraisers for PCC over the years!!

LMCP Pre-Proposal accepted

The Bat Committee (Annette, Tammy, Don, Liz and Jim) are happy to announce that our pre-proposal for the Lake Michigan Coastal Program Grant was accepted to start a Bat Monitoring and Habitat Research program. A full proposal is due in mid-December. If selected for the funds, we would begin in August of 2020 by partnering with local public spaces in the Lake Michigan/Gallien watershed to install monitors and/or habitat. The program would build and share collected data to help scientists and researchers who need bat studies from NW Indiana, as well as provide needed habitat for bats.

heinze spotlight on frame

The Oct 12 Shirley Heinze Fall bus tour highlighted the conservation work that is underway along the east branch of the Little Calumet River in LaPorte and Porter Counties and its tributaries. The tour visited a number of properties permanently protected by Shirley Heinze Land Trust, as well as county, town, national park, and other nonprofit-owned properties that are being restored along the river.

The bus departed from the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center (1215 IN-49, Porter, IN) at 8am. It made stops at Red Mill County Park, Frame Little Calumet Conservation Area, Dale B. Engquist Nature Preserve, Wykes-Plampin Nature Preserve, Keith Richard Walner Nature Preserve, Hawthorne Park, Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve and the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk.

PCC appreciated the invitation to show our prize property to the group. Jim, Gary, Don and Bill were on hand to welcome guests and tell them about our part of the river.
