November Edition
Labs are no Chicken (or turkey) to the Month of November
Labs have no sign of chickening (or turkeying) out of this Month! Here is all lab based info you need to know to keep with this month:
- Science labs are going strong!
- Gather your kings and queens because MV's Chess club is a blast to the past! Chess Club meets on Tuesdays from 2 P.M. to 3 P.M. at the tables outside the MPR!
- Interested in earning 2.5 credits while doing something healthy for your mind and body? Come to MV and take Yoga with Mrs. Marina Campenella. Class will be held Monday afternoons for 1 hour. Contact your teacher for more info!
- ROP Horticulture is worth 5 credits per semester and meets on Tuesdays from 1-3 P.M. You get to learn all sorts of things that have to do with growing a garden and getting hands-on.
Art Class is offered on Tuesdays at 10-11:30 AM for Middle School / High School students, and 12-1:30 PM for Elementary Students, on campus. Art Class is also offered as an online program. Art Class DOES offer credit for middle school / high school students who take Art as an elective. There's a link to sign up for art class (either on campus or online) on the Lab Schedules page of our school's website.
- Do you want to learn the arts of writing? Writing can be a very powerful tool to express yourself, and Ms. Allison Taverner does a lab that meets on every Wednesday at 2pm to teach the structure and overall art of writing. If you want to improve your writing, or just love to learn about the art, this is just the lab for you!

Mysterious Boxes Around Campus
What are these orange boxes spread out around campus?
Well, the eagle scout by the name of AJ Hammerquist has been working with our school to put up these boxes around campus.
I interviewed AJ Hammerquist on these boxes, called bat boxes, and this is what he had to say:
Questions
- Who are the Eagle Scouts? Tell us a little about the Eagle Scouts and the history of the Boy Scouts. His answer: "Well, we are Boy Scouts, and the Eagle Scouts are the final rank of Boy Scouts. There are a few other words that you can gain, but typically, earning your Eagle Scout award means that you have pretty much completed your Boy Scouts."
- What are Bat boxes? What do Bat boxes do? His answer: "Bat boxes are like birdhouses (for bats) but are different because they are higher and keep the bats warm and they actually attract bats and keep the insect populations down"
- Why did you set up the Bat Boxes? His answer: "Because Dr. P requested they be set up on campus and it seemed like a fun project!"
- What are the benefits of having Bat Boxes? His answer: "They decrease insect populations and instead of bats nesting in buildings, they will be attracted by the boxes."
- What time of the year can people find Bat Boxes? Why? His answer: "They can typically be built at any time of the year because bats are typically not seasonal, so once we set up a bat box they are usually concreted to the ground."
Yes bat boxes can be very beneficial to the environment, not only through keeping insect populations down, but according to National Geographic, bats are important pollinators. They also use echolocation to see their surroundings. Talk about real life animal superheroes!
Local News by Isabela Tapia
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, people are excited for food, friends, and family. This is a joyous time for most of the population, although not everyone is fortunate enough to portray the typical thanksgiving feast. People without a home to cook in or enough money to buy a thanksgiving dinner are left out of this humbling holiday.
The homeless population is rapidly increasing, especially in LA county. There are 41,290 people of all ages that are homeless just in LA county as of 2020. This is the sad truth of our lives and we proceed to forget the people who are less fortunate. We tend to not advocate for those who got dealt the wrong deck of cards.
But we can change that, and it all begins with you. By doing one small act of kindness towards the less fortunate we can help those in need this holiday season. By donating clothes that don’t fit you anymore or donating some canned foods and other goods, you would make a difference of a thousand worlds for someone this holiday season. Here in Simi Valley, we have our very own samaritan center. It is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am. to 2 pm. It is located on 280 Royal Ave, Simi Valley, CA 93065. By donating you are spreading the holiday spirit and sharing what the holidays are all about: kindness.
So next time you’re thinking about that delicious thanksgiving feast, think, is a homeless person included in this holiday? Have fun this Thanksgiving, and remember to fight with kindness!

Creative Corner: Poem of the Month
What is more rewarding than putting your passions and ideas on a blank space? It's something that has existed through all of time, and is one of the most natural ways to express yourself. Art is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that is the beautiful thing about art! Here is an awesome poem written by a gifted Monte Vista student named Blake Getty:
Poem is Called: Ant on a Concrete Path
The ant walks along.
It walks upon a long
Concrete path.
The concrete path
Sits in a park.
The park sits
Within a city.
The city
Sits within a state.
The state
Sits in a country.
The country sits upon
A rocky sphere.
The sphere
Walks its way through
A system.
The system
Walks its way through
A galaxy.
The galaxy
Walks its way through
A universe.
The universe walks
Its way through space,
Like an ant walking
On a concrete path.
by Blake Getty
The poem can make you feel just like an ant walking on a concrete path, but just because it may make you feel a little small compared to our galaxy, doesn't mean you can't still be a big part of your community!

Side Note to Stay Healthy: Remember to Keep a Healthy Diet
Eating healthily is just as important to being healthy as staying active is. In fact, according to the cdc.gov, healthy eating in children and teenagers can support brain growth and development, supports physical growth, strengthens bones and boosts the immune system, and helps achieve a healthy body weight. In adults, it can do much of the same it does for children, such as strengthen bones, boost the immune system, and help achieve a healthy body weight, as well as lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.
But you may ask, how do I know if I'm eating healthfully? How can I know what eating healthfully is?
Well, first, you need to know that there are 6 kinds of nutrients that our body needs. These nutrients are water, proteins (such as eggs, meat and fish, beans, and nuts), minerals (such as calcium), carbohydrates (such as roots and fruits), fats (such as oils), and vitamins (such as Vitamin A. Vitamins can be either fat-soluble, such as Vitamin A, which can be stored in the fat under the skin, or water soluble, such as Vitamin C, which means that they dissolve in water and pass through the body easily and need to be constantly replaced).
You should be getting a regular intake of all of these, but to know how much you need of each of these per day, you should visit myplate.gov.
But what if you think you are already eating healthily? How do you know? Well then, keeping a food journal would be an excellent choice at knowing exactly what you eat. Record what you eat and assess what you might need to change or stay the same. You can input your results from your food journal at myplate.gov.
Restaurants are choices. Some may not be the most healthy, but most have more healthful options. When ordering in or eating out, make sure to keep in mind that choosing the most healthful option is probably the best step in towards staying healthy. You also have to keep in mind your caloric intake. According to healthychildren.org:
- Boys require an average of 2,800 calories per day.
- Girls require an average of 2,200 calories per day.
although caloric intake may vary from case to case.
Eating healthfully is a great trait to have and that paired with regular physical fitness and mental health can truly help maintain a balance in the health triangle and can make you have more energy, be in a greater mood, and have more of an open-mind! You know what they say: "you are what you eat", so make sure to be proud of what you put in your body!

NFL Week 11 Previews and Predictions By Thomas Bonvehi
Patriots 30-10 Falcons
The Falcons will start with a touchdown and maybe even a defensive turnover, but the Patriots are fighting for the division title and will come roaring back to score 30 unanswered points to blow away the team they beat in Super Bowl 51.
Packers 30-7 Vikings
Kirk Cousins has always struggled against winning teams and the Packers have looked unstoppable at times. Kirk Cousins suffers against teams with winning records and the Packers are tied with the highest record at 8-2. This will be no contest, with Aaron Rodgers throwing for 300+ yards, 3 touchdowns, and getting at least a passer rating of 130.
Colts 20-17 Bills
A close game and the first major game. This is a huge game for both teams. The Colts to possibly get into the postseason, and the Bills to hold their crown as the best team in their division. This will be a battle of defense with the Colts defense getting big time stops while the offense will click near the end of the 4th and win the game.
Ravens 23-7 Bears
Matt Nagy’s job is on the line, but even though the Ravens have been saved by high-end talent, the Bears are not a challenge, and Matt Nagy will most likely be fired at the end of the season.
Lions 3-13 Browns
This game will be very low-scoring and close, with Baker Mayfield throwing to Jarvis Landry for the only touchdown.
Texans 0-33 Titans
The Titans may not have Derrick Henry, but they have a solid quarterback in Ryan Tannehill and 2 of the best receivers in the game as they come up against a weakened secondary. Tannehill will throw for 2 touchdowns and 300 yards, with both touchdowns going to AJ Brown.
Dolphins 23-10 Jets
The Jets are injured at QB, and Tua will struggle, but he will ultimately give the Dolphins a win mostly due to the Jets being down to their 3rd string quarterback and the Jets imploding.
Saints 20-23 Eagles
The Saints lost Jameis Winston to an ACL injury and he is out for the year. They will give it Alvin Kamara and while he will score 2 touchdowns, the Eagles defense will adjust and the Eagles will win on a last-minute field goal
Washington 13-29 Panthers
Both of these teams have just beaten 2 of the best teams in the league, but Carolina will win due to the fact they are fighting for a playoff spot and Cam Newton looks to revive his career.
49ers 30-6 Jaguars
Urban Meyers is not a good fit, and it’s time for him to leave sooner rather than later. The 49ers destroyed the Rams, who looked like an entire Pro Bowl team, and are now playing a basement feeder in the Jags. This will not be a close game at all.
Bengals 26-17 Raiders
Arguably the game of the week. Both teams sit at 5-4 with the potential to head to the postseason. This is by far the most important game for both teams but the Bengals will win due to off the field distractions from the Raiders, who have to put up with leaked e-mails, death threats online by an own player, and a car crash that killed a woman and her dog because their player was driving 156 MPH under the influence. All of this will leave the Raiders with a lot to deal with, and Joe Burrow and JaMarr Chase will tear the secondary alive.
Cowboys 21-10 Chiefs
The Chiefs may look like they have regrouped, but their last 2 games have been against a Packers team without their starting QB and the Raiders (see previous column above). The Cowboys have been clicking really well and the Chiefs will struggle to get any traction.
Cardinals 30-10 Seahawks
The Seahawks might have Russell Wilson back, but it is pretty clear he doesn’t want to be there anymore, and that the team heavily relies on him. The Cardinals are one of the best teams in the league and will continue to win.
Steelers 20-30 Chargers
The Chargers have a few question marks around them, but they will walk out of the building with a win against the Steelers who just tied, yes TIED, to the worst team in the league based on their record.
Giants 23-10 Buccaneers
The Bucs are coming off a surprising loss against Washington, and I expect the same to happen here. The Giants won’t control the game, but will pull away in the 4th and ultimately pull off a massive upset and win for both team and staff.

Champions League (Soccer) Match Day 4 by Thomas Bonvehi
Malmo 0-1 Chelsea
Chelsea absolutely dominated Malmo, as they had 22 shots compared to Malmo’s 4. Plus, Chelsea had 11 shots on target while Malmo didn’t have any of their shots go on target. Chelsea controlled 73% of the possession and while the scoreline may not show it, Chelsea obliterated Malmo.
Wolfsburg 2-1 RB Salzburg
RB Salzburg surprisingly lost as they had more shots on target and possession then Wolfsburg, but they couldn’t convert as often as Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg were able to finish their chances and ended with a very important win
Villareal 2-0 Young Boys
This was a pretty even match which was decided over who could finish the chances they created. Villareal was the team that did, scoring 2 goals, one in the final minutes to put the game away.
Juventus 4-2 Zenit
Juventus had 11 shots on target and dominated the game, but allowing 50% of Zenit’s shots on target to go in should be a concern.
Bayern 5-2 Benfica
24 shots, 12 of them being on target, and 66% possession. That was Bayern’s statline. However, allowing 2 shots on target and allowing both to go in is not a good thing to allow.
Sevilla 1-2 Lille
Sevilla started off hot and kept possession, but Lille scored 2 times in 8 minutes and kept Sevilla in check for the rest of the game.
Dynamo Kiev 0-1 Barcelona
Barcelona dominated possession but both teams ended up with 3 shots on target, with Barcelona’s young star Ansu Fati scoring in the 70th minute to give Barcelona a much needed win.
Atalanta 2-2 Manchester United
Atalanta should have won but Cristiano Ronaldo bailed out Manchester by scoring 2 goals in stoppage time to make the final score 2-2.
Real Madrid 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk
This game was really all about Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema, scoring twice to a much needed victory.
AC Milan 1-1 Porto
Porto dominated on all fronts, even scoring in the 6th minute, only to tie due to an own goal.
Sporting 4-0 Beskitas
In terms of stats, these teams weren’t separated by much, but Sporting finished more than half of their shots and ended up running away with the win.
Dortmund 1-3 Ajax
Dortmund held the lead for most of the game until Ajax made a run scoring 3 unanswered goals in 20 minutes, with one in the 93rd minute to confirm the win.
Sheriff 1-3 Inter Milan
Sheriff's Cinderella story might be coming to an end. They lost to Inter Milan without a fight, only scoring late in the game when it was already wrapped up.
Liverpool 2-0 Atletico Madrid
Liverpool scored 2 early goals and controlled possession and dominated on the defensive front, not allowing a single shot on target
Man City 4-1 Club Brugge
Man City bolted straight out of the gate and didn’t even make it a contest. Club Brugge did get an own goal but Man City quickly bounced and didn’t make another mistake.
RB Leipzig 2-2 PSG
A surprising turn of events, as PSG drawed against another team that they should have beat, with Leipzig scoring a last minute penalty to seal the draw.
