Self-Care is Not Indulgence...It is Discipline
If we are being honest, self-care is actually kind of boring. Which is why self-care is a discipline. It takes discipline to do the things that are good for us instead of what feels good in the moment. It takes even more discipline to refuse to take responsibility for other people’s emotional well-being and it takes discipline to take full and complete responsibility for our own.
Establish Norms for Virtual Classrooms
Norms may include a dress code when meeting on Google Classroom or Hangout (no pajamas). Also teach students how to ask questions without interrupting other speakers. Maintain order and good classroom management virtually. For instance, when on camera with a group of students talking, ask students to hold up the index finger to indicate a response to what’s being discussed and two fingers to indicate they want to bring up something new. Remember, Ethical Practices for School Counselors and FERPA Laws matter.
