STUDENT SHOUT OUT
ROCK OF THE RANGERS
“Rock of the Rangers” is an after-school club at Hamilton Intermediate School that teaches fifth-grade students how to play guitar for the first time. The club began with over 30 students and many more waiting for a spot to open. The club meets every week for one hour after school and students learn the basics of playing chords and reading sheet music for guitar, called tablature. Students begin learning basic songs and progress toward more complex pieces.
I have been teaching a guitar club for 5 years, however, this is my first year of getting to work with the fifth graders at Hamilton Intermediate. I provide the guitars and equipment for students to borrow if they do not own one and students take home the guitars to practice between meets. I was pleasantly surprised to see how invested my students have been this year, expressing to me that they would like to perform a concert at the end of the school year, which will be held on May 9th.
Over the course of this year, multiple students expressed their desire to expand the club beyond guitars. We now currently have three singers, one ukulele player, and a bass guitar player as a result of that student input! In preparation for our concert, we have been meeting twice a week, and many students even during their recess to prepare. I am very proud of the effort, confidence, and dedication that these students have shown toward learning a new skill!

WELCOME SPRING!
In the Spring, I love to order caterpillars for my classes to observe with magnifying glasses! This year, I chose to create a "Butterfly Observation Journal" for students to document their observations and draw a picture of what they were observing. This journal contained twelve observation pages to allow students to document three times a week to capture the entire life cycle process. On Monday, our caterpillars were happy and healthy, ready to be released in the sunshine! We are now creating projects that describe the entire process and what students' favorite parts were. This is truly one of my favorite activities to do with my students and they absolutely love it as well!
