WORD OF THE WEEK - "Flexible"
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
I sent a message to our parents on Wednesday evening to respond to a few questions that have arisen since we began this journey of "Engaged Learning at Home." I think we're doing a great job navigating our way through this unfamiliar terrain.
The decisions that we make are always based on what is good for our 1100 students and the 75+ Bumpus staff members. If that decision turns your house upside-down, you have to communicate that. We'll do everything we can to support you. Your child's teachers, grade level administrator, and guidance counselor need to know how we can best support your child. Their social-emotional well-being is just as important to us as their academic success. We can get through this but we have to do it together.
We continue to hope that you are able to successfully navigate our Week at a Glance (WAAG) platform, access your assignments, and find a routine that has worked for your family as the weeks progress. Have your child show you some of the videos from their teachers and games they've played with the teachers and peers. Community is so important to us and you're a part of that community.
Chromebooks and Locker Contents
We will continue with Chromebook drop-off (for the most critical issues) and pick-up as well as locker content distribution each Monday, 10:30 - 12:30.
BumpusHelp
In the event you are unable to reach your classroom teacher, grade level counselor or grade level administrator, we have a dedicated email address that will be responded to by our Communication Team (bumpushelp@hoover.k12.al.us). While there will likely be someone on campus each M, T, and W to receive mail and deliveries, the building will not be open to the public. Most access to the building by students, parents and teachers will be by appointment only.
BumpusPR
Additionally, because we want to maintain our connection to you during this time, please continue to use our BumpusPR@hoover.k12.al.us to share family and community news and at home learning photos. We love hearing from you and often use the information in our student eNews slides and on our social media platforms. If you haven't already, as a means of staying connected, check us out and share on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

"Engaged Learning at Home" Initiative Tips for Success
Each week and each day, throughout the day, review these tips for success.
Start each Monday morning by going to the Bumpus website to get your Academic team and your Electives/PE Week at a Glance (WAAG).
Make sure to READ all directions and try first before immediately sending a message to a friend or email to a teacher.
Like you do in class, ask at least two buddies for clarification before asking the teacher.
Read/Watch each teacher’s directions very carefully, maybe twice. Most of your questions are probably answered there.
Each subject is broken up so you should spend around 30 minutes a day.
We would like you to work daily, so your assignments do not pile up. Reach out to your teachers if this is a problem for you and your family.
Take breaks between subjects.
Remember, iNow is your teacher's gradebook. They will be putting in grades as assignments are completed. When you see a .01, it means the assignment has not been turned in yet. Work to get them in so you can stay on track.
Continue to check emails, Google Classroom, and INOW at least once a day, if not more.

Children and Teens Can Respond to Stress in Different Ways
Anxiety and sadness during a time of stress can look different in children and teens; they don’t always respond in the same way. Here are some things to look for:
Anger even at small irritations
Excessive crying, especially in younger children
Excessive worry or sadness
Unhealthy eating habits
Too much or too little sleep
Avoidance of school assignments
Unexplained headaches or other pain
Substance use/abuse
Unusual avoidance of family activities or activities previously enjoyed
The appearance of being numb
If you see any of these changes in your child or teen; don’t hesitate to reach out to your school counselor. Counselors are still here and available to help students, parents, and families.

Hoover Public Library News
The Hoover Public Library has valuable resources. Here is a message from Katie Jane Morris at Hoover Public Library.
HPL is here to support our librarians, educators, students, and families during these unusual and often difficult times. Please help us spread the word!
Hoover Public Library WEBSITE
http://www.hooverlibrary.org/
This gives you access to our downloadable services, Katie Jane's daily blog post (which is filled with resources), and the help form. This is the best way to get fast answers from the library regarding important issues -- getting and using a library card, downloading digital resources, finding resources for children, getting book recommendations, using technology, doing online research, and more. A person simply gives their name, number, email, and request, and a staff member quickly provides an answer.

LITERARY MAGAZINE
Calling all song writers, poets, artists, photographers, and authors. The literary magazine needs you. We are looking for submissions for this year ́s magazine, which will be published online. This year's theme is war and peace. Any drawings, writings, or photos that connect to this theme are acceptable, and students should consider posting submissions about their experiences dealing with COVID-19 (the Coronavirus). Some have claimed that we are in a time of war, so we would like to hear/see the battles students are going through or the peace they have encountered in the face of it. Submit your work through the following link: https://forms.gle/g4FSwN4tNpMn5jVW7. Deadline for submissions is April 30th.
DEBATE & READING - Ms. Hall
- Reading--Good job with getting into a routine of using software and MyOn projects (audio recordings for my 6ht graders). This week, I am going to introduce you to Class Craft. We will use this ¨gaming software¨ as a way for you to earn extra credit.
Debate--During week one you guys did a great job showing how much you know about forming an argument. During week two you guys worked hard to show me your presentation skills. These videos will be posted on Google Classroom. Take time to watch your peers in ¨debate¨ action. This week, you will be putting both your argument skills and presentation skills together. I canńot wait to hear and see your arguments!
SCHOOL MEDICATIONS
Please email Melanie Schmith at mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us to discuss any needs for medication pick up. These will be handled on an individual basis.
The 2019-2020 PHOTO CONTEST hosted by Mr. Doss has been canceled due to events beyond our control and the limited amount of photo submissions to this year’s photo contest. I appreciate those who did make submissions and those images will be showcased. If you submitted to this year’s contest, Mr. Doss will be choosing up to ten of your top shots submitted and post them on his photography class Instagram page at Instagram.com/rfb_photo. Feel free to contact Mr. Doss with any questions.
