All-School Color Run and 8th Grade Celebration Preliminary Info:
On May 23, our final day of school for the 22-23 school year, we have an early-release schedule, an end-of-year assembly, an 8th grade pizza party, and a color run celebration. Some stand-alone emails regarding color run volunteer opportunities, and more information regarding both events will be coming via stand-alone emails this week at some point, and will be republished in next week's IHMS Weekly News. For now, here are some important details:
May 23 Color Run:
- Students MUST bring a water bottle that can be refilled.
- Students do NOT need any supplies - including their backpack.
- 8th graders do NOT need to bring lunch unless they do not want pizza
- Sunglasses or eye-wear will NOT be provided for color run.
- Color run color powder is non-toxic.
- School ends at 1:45 p.m. (early release). Buses run early this day as well.

Summer Reading Opportunities
For those avid readers (and even those more reluctant that could use a little incentivizing)…check out some of Kansas City’s summer reading programs offered by area public libraries.
Audiobook Sync is another option for those who like to listen to books while at the pool or on the road. It is for teens 13+. Students get free audiobooks all summer long! Click here to see the titles being offered this summer.
And of course, students will have access to our school’s eBooks through Sora. Happy reading!

Give Me 20 Presentations Are Coming!
On Monday, May 22nd our 8th graders will be participating in a send-off activity focused on mental health and suicide prevention. The Give Me 20 program was started by two local moms who lost their teen children to suicide and now they are working to make a difference in how we view and talk about mental health. The 8th graders will hear directly from the moms and then create life boxes to keep with them during hard times as they move on to high school and beyond. We’re looking forward to an impactful activity for our students as we wish them well in their futures.
To opt your student out of this activity, please email nicolenelson@smsd.org

9th Grade Vaccination Requirements + Nursing Notes
Attention 8th Grade Parents:
Hepatitis A (Hep A):
- Two doses are required for all students entering 9th grade.
- Doses must be at least 6 months apart.
Not sure if you have turned in your child’s vaccination records to the nurse? You can check Skyward.
- Accessing student health information:
- In Skyward Family Access, on the left-hand side, scroll down to “health info” and click on the link.
- Across the top, you will see a blue underlined link that says “display options.”
- Show Vaccinations – this will display your child’s immunizations on file with the school.
- If you don’t see a dose listed, your nurse does not have the record. Please provide that to the school nurse.
Please contact the nurse with any questions.

Anyone interested in football:
I wanted to share with you information on fall sign-ups for youth Tackle and Flag football this coming season. This fall our Lancer youth football teams will compete in the KCFC football organization. Our goal as a high school staff is to work with our youth program coaches to help teach and install the same fundamentals, terminology and schemes that we will use at the high school and eventually junior high school levels. Below is a letter from our KCFC area director Bear Cohen. Please register as soon as possible and please share registration information with anyone that is interested.
Also, we have started a Lancer Youth Football Instagram account. Please follow if you have an instagram account for more information on Lancer Youth Football at lancer_youthfootball.

SME Weight Room Upgrade Donations
Help upgrade the Shawnee Mission East weight room! With over 400 student-athletes utilizing the facility each week and 700 over the summer, we need to convert underutilized space, upgrade outdated equipment, and purchase new units urgently. The plan necessary to accomplish this, given the growing need, is a minimum of $150,000 which we can’t do without your support!
We invite you to visit the current weight room (as we envision our state-of-the-art weight room) facility for a tour. Join our Strength and Conditioning and new Head Football Coach, Mark Simoneau, as he showcases the facility's much-needed features and highlights the resources required to enhance our boys’ and girls’ athletic programs.
