Dear Parents,
This week, we will continue our Unit "Growing our Garden." Our sprouts have gotten taller and we have now planted them outside in the courtyard area behind the classroom! They are learning so much about plants, gardens, and what is in gardens. We have talked about the different parts of plants and had a "taste test" of different plant parts that we eat (almost all of them loved baby spinach:). We have new class "pets"- caterpillars!! We will watch them grow and learn about their life cycle. Our bean sprouts have continued to grow. We are continuing our observations on these living things. This week, we will continue to discuss foods grown from plants and what parts of the plant we harvest and eat (like tomatoes for tomato sauce). We will make some pizza to enjoy during class. We will continue discuss and observe what plants and other living things need to survive.
Literacy: We will continue to learn letters and letter sounds, and blending those sounds and phonemes together to create words. Breaking down the syllables, sounds, and parts of the word are important pre- reading skills necessary for successful readers later as they begin to read.
Math: We will discuss the attributes of shapes and learn how shapes fit together to form patterns. We will count in sequence to 30 and beyond, and connect numbers to the quantities they represent.
Science: We will continue to make observations about life cycles of plants and insects. We will draw and write about these changes and observations of our own plants and caterpillars in our science journals. We will continue to learn what comes from plants and other living things. We will discuss what living things need to grow, as well as distinguish living things/ non- living things.
Social Emotional: Our Social Emotional Curriculum we use is Second Step. This week, we will be working on "Riding the Kindergarten Bus." Children may face new stressors when they begin Kindergarten. We have been and will continue to practice identifying feelings in self and others, and using the calm down strategies we have learned this year. Using these skills can help children focus on their schoolwork and better handle stressors. The home links below have some ideas for what you can do at home to support our learning!
This weeks vocabulary words
How to help your child at home
· Give your child two-step directions (e.g. Get your coat from the closet and put it on”). Encourage your child to give directions to explain how s/he has done something. For example, ask your child to explain how s/he made a structure out of Lego blocks. When playing doctor, ask your child to explain what s/he did to give the baby a checkup. Draw a picture and/or write down your child’s story as s/he tells it. Your child will soon grasp the power of storytelling and written language.
- Have your child help you plan and discuss daily activities. For example, have him/her make a shopping list for grocery store, or help you plan his/her birthday party. Ask his/her opinion: “What do you think your cousin/friend would like for their birthday? What kind of fruit do we need to buy at the store?”
-
· Let your child help you locate different items at the grocery store.
