Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 18th-22nd
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week in science we will be reviewing Lesson 1 and 2. On Tuesday, students will take a quiz over these lessons. We will then start looking at Lesson 3: Reflection, Refraction, and Absorption. Students will get to participate in hands-on inquiry labs to see the different ways light travels.
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will start our next unit on Explorers. We will start with Lesson 1: Reasons for Exploration. Students will take a short quiz on this one lesson on Friday.
- Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA:
This week we are continuing our first Lucy Calkins unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to think deeply about characters while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. In writing, we are continuing our Realistic Fiction/Narrative unit by drafting and revising with an eye toward believability. Take a peek at your child's writing! They are all turning into something awesome! Spelling words will be given on Monday and the first spelling test will be next Friday the 22nd. This week in math we will continue addition! Students should be taking their notebooks home every night to review concepts taught in class. - Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in ELA, we will be reading our last Junior Great Book story in our Trust Unit: Fresh. Students will take an open book test on "Fresh" on Friday. On Thursday, students will take their Reading Map Test. In math, we will be adding multi-digit numbers using the place value method and the standard algorithm. Students will take a short quiz on addition on Wednesday. In writing, we will edit our personal narratives, fixing capitalization, organization, punctuation, and spelling. We will start publishing these stories next week.
