In Case You Missed It:
Thank you to everyone for your feedback concerning the pep rally change. It was almost a complete split on what to do. We even had a few that wanted it both days, but the majority were fine with it being moved onto the day of our last football game. This will be a very exciting game to attend on Monday. IF we win against North Moore, then we will go to the conference match the following Monday at Pinecrest High School vs Southern Middle School. SLMS Athletic Director, Tommy Harrington, has already begun to make tentative plans for being able to support our team if we get to make it to the "Big Game"!
We are so fortunate to have some extremely involved and helpful parents that want to support our school anyway they can. Our PTSO has worked hard as a collective group to ensure classroom teachers and students are supported through the $100 gift cards (Remember: All receipts MUST be turned into Ashley Parker by Tuesday, October 30!), opportunities to purchase spirit wear, and multiple opportunities to fellowship and make "free money" for our school at area restaurants. They also work tirelessly to collect box tops and generate volunteers at the thrift store (also ways to get money for our school) They will be feeding our volunteers for Health-a-rama and are already discussing how to show their appreciation for you during the holidays. Another parent, Kipp Thompson, aka The Voice of SanLee Athletics, has been announcing at football games. We had Carl Bryan, another SLMS parent, announcing at our last softball game. Kipp has also worked to highlight all our fall sports teams through video clips and interviews . He also has generated sponsorships (t-shirts, golf balls, gift cards, etc) from area businesses for our Student Athlete of the Week . Parent, LCS employee, and PTO officer, Joy Thompson, went to a training at SmartBoard and discussed all that was going on at SanLee with AVID and the impact that AVID National Demonstration status will have on our school as a teaching and learning center. SmartBoard is donating a 75" SmartBoard to SanLee which will be put on a stand (also donated by another vendor) to use in trainings and AVID Showcases. I say all this to make sure you are cognizant of all that our families and community are doing to support SanLee and our efforts to prepare all our students for whatever future they choose. Almost everywhere I go someone talks about all the great stuff they are hearing about our school. In a time that public schools do not have the best reputation or support, we can say we DO at at SLMS. We are so blessed!
Thank you to everyone of our AVID Leaders (A. Pienaar, A. Inman, S. Swierczek, K. Degon, B. DiMarcello, B. Marshburn, M. Colwell, J. Schneider, K. Caldwell,V. Pienaar, M. Graham, S. Yoder, T. Wicker, H. Smith, B. Marshal,M. Berlauk, K. Briggs, M. Hildreth, E. Holland, K. Vaughn, S. Bristow) for giving back and leading in APLW trainings on Friday. Nejla even created a session on how to support AVID as a counselor at SLMS for Anna. Congratulations to Katie White! Friday's training in Using Socratic Seminar in Academic Classes put her at 12 hours of training in AVID Professional Learning! We now have 56% of our certified staff with 12 our more hours of AVID approved training and average 17 hours of training. This demonstrates our commitment to AVID as being what's right for ALL kids. It also exhibits that we are all lifelong learners pledging to doing whatever it takes for OUR kids and each other.
If you were not aware, Sarah Barker, ESL Support @SLMS, comes in every Saturday from 8-noon to assist any ESL student needing and wanting extra assistance. This means that our building is open from 8-noon each Saturday if you ever need extra time in your room. The 7th grade door is unlocked so you may come in during those hours without any issues. Please be sure to be out by noon.
They did it again! Our SLMS Custodian Team showed they are top notch and have been named Clean School of the Month for October and will be recognized at the Lee County Schools Board Meeting on Tuesday, November 7 at 6:00 pm. Most of us are in our own little bubble of SanLee and do not know how fortunate we are to have a safe, clean environment to work. Visitors and itinerant employees say all the time how beautiful and clean SanLee is. It is a collective effort as everything is around here, and our devoted and hard-working custodians lead this charge.
I'm pleased to announce we have a new edition to our Exceptional Children's team starting on Monday. Shakera Wilson will be joining us as our math resource teacher. Shakera is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and is leaving a position at Carter G Wooden Charter School in Winston Salem to relocate to our area. Make sure to go by and welcome Shakera and offer any assistance you can during her transition.
Laurie Preston, EC inclusion teacher, will be leaving us on Friday, November 3. I hope you are able to make contact before she leaves to let her know how much we appreciate all that she has done for our children at SanLee during her time at SLMS.
You may have been fortunate enough to get a glimpse of baby Makai and mom Brianna Simmons on Friday. They dropped by after early dismissal and are doing well. It was great to see them both.
Coming Up:
Benchmarks and Check Ins:
Evan is finalizing small group testing sites this weekend and will be sending that out along with procedures at least by Monday afternoon. Grade levels, PLC's and teams need to go through information and read carefully! It is imperative to meet with new teachers to SanLee to update on our procedures and answer questions. I would highly suggest not having ELA/math PLC's on Tuesday and have a grade level team meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page and READY!
