Showcase a School
Stillson Elementary School
Jennifer Sarauer, Stillson Principal, and Mrs. Emily Dorney, 5th grade teacher, presented a powerpoint titled Adopt-A-Pilot Program. This is the first year that Stillson has been a part of this program. Mrs. Dorney’s 5th grade class worked with Southwest Airlines pilot Eric Vrablic. The Adopt-A-Pilot program is a unique opportunity for students to experience first-hand what it is like to be a pilot and to explore aviation. The program also teaches geography, life values/career planning, as well as the scientific process and aerodynamics. 5th grade students, Emmett Lesperance, Merrell Vrablic, and Liam Kraft, presented many things they learned about airplanes and aviation during the four week program; click here for more details.
Parent Engagement: One School, One Read
Gina Galeazzi, a Title 1 reading teacher, presented a powerpoint titled One School, One Read. The One School, One Read program is a parent engagement program for all families at the Title 1 schools (Parkview, Southview, and Halmstad). Families have from January to March to read the book or listen to chapter recordings. Throughout the event, families complete activities and send them back to school for “rockin reader” tickets that are entered into monthly drawings. Adventures of a South Pole Pig was not available in a Spanish version, so this year Ms. Galeazzi partnered with Angie Oplinger’s high school Spanish students. Colby Stoll, Hailey Rykal, Emma Koehler, and Solomon Mason, read the book, summarized the chapters, and recorded the summaries in Spanish for families to listen to. All of the summaries are posted on the One Read, One School website for families to access; click here for the presentation.
