Battle of Iwo Jima 75th Anniversary

Join the National Museum of the Pacific War for an interactive presentation commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Hear from a WWII veteran as he shares his experiences of landing in the first wave with the 5th Marine Division at the base of Mt. Suribachi on February 19, 1945. The program will also include museum staff who will be providing additional information on the 36-day struggle, photographs, video footage, and artifacts connected to the Battle of Iwo Jima.

All About Animals: Birds

Join us for an amazing program that's all about the animals. This program features two different live animals and a question-and-answer session with an animal outreach specialist. Discover amazing animal facts as we compare and contrast both animals and learn more about their unique adaptations.
NOTE: Each class can submit one animal-related question they'd like answered live to education@fortworthzoo.org. Questions will be drawn at random; however, due to time constraints, not all questions will be answered in the program. Please include your school's name, grade level, and teacher's name with your class question.

Coastal Science Investigation
Presented by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

TPWD's Coastal Fisheries Kills and Spills Team are marine biologists who are trained to determine the probable cause of large-scale fish kills in Texas bays and the Gulf of Mexico. During this program, we'll meet up with members of the Kills and Spills Team to act as fish crime scene investigators at a real fish kill. In this CSI-inspired investigation, we'll use environmental clues like dissolved oxygen, salinity, and water samples to figure out "whodunnit."
NOTE: We will be showing video and images from a real fish kill. Students will see fish at various stages of decomposition.

Cost: FREEThe rabbit (or bunny) is an easily recognizable mammal that many people associate with springtime. During this program, you will get to see a live domestic rabbit while we discuss its wild counterparts. We will explore their adaptations and body structures, the different species of rabbits in Texas, their habitats and ecological benefit, as well as the differences between rabbits and hares.

Creepy Critters (RECORDING ONLY)

Cost: FREEUnfortunately for our guests, their creepy appearance strikes fear in most people, even though (in some cases) they have never encountered them. Our visitors are quite an eclectic bunch, from those with no limbs, to others with four, or even eight! Join us as we take an up-close look at these critters and discuss how they fit into the food chain as well as their adaptations and the structures that bring fear to many.

Cost: FREEThe owl: nature’s nocturnal bird of prey. Accompanied by our live Eastern Screech Owl in the studio, we will learn about these interesting animals found around the globe and all across Texas. This program will examine the special adaptations that allow them to fly, hunt for prey, and survive in their environment. We will also play the calls of some common Texas owls that your students may hear in their own backyard.

The Magic of Monarchs (RECORDING ONLY)

Cost: FREEFor such a delicate insect, the Monarch butterfly leads an adventurous life! During spring and fall, millions of Monarchs will travel through Texas on their way to or from their overwintering sites in Mexico. Live caterpillars and adult Monarchs will be on hand during the program, allowing your students to see them up close and in detail. Join us as we discuss the basic needs, life cycle, adaptations, and migration patterns of the Monarch butterfly and learn how you can help conserve this unique creature.
