LGBT Pride
On June 28, 1969, customers of the New York gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, organized themselves to riot against gay-targeted police harassment. Now known as the Stonewall Riots, the reaction was a civil rights statement against police raids and arrests. Protests, demonstrations, newspapers, and civil rights organizations were held and created in the days after the riots. These actions amplified the growing conversation toward LGBT equality in the name of the law and throughout society.
A year after the riots happened, the first pride parades happened in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. The first pride parade in Minnesota was in 1972 when a small group of 50 organized in Loring Park to march down Nicollet Mall. Now, the Twin Cities has the third largest pride parade in the nation. We hope to see you at our booth in the education area. Please stop by and say hello to us if you are out and about for the event. There is more information below on how to get involved if you would like to volunteer with us.
Caribbean American History Month
Understandably, rising sea levels and the health of the oceans are of considerable importance to the Caribbean region. There are 30 island nations and territories in the Caribbean sea, and ten more continental nations have Caribbean coastlines. On June 8, World Oceans Day, the Institute of Caribbean Studies has created an online festival to raise awareness of these concerns.
There are some fantastic local things to know about. Marla's Caribbean Cuisine was featured on the television show, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri. The 15th Annual Reggae on the Riverboat Ride was on June 21st.

For a fantastic mix of some brilliant Black Music Month heroes, listen in on Bessie Smith, Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The World Famous Davis Sisters, Jimi Hendrix, India Arie, Miles Davis, and Missy Elliott.
Topics in Diversity: #YesAllWomen
We, as a society, would like to believe we have become more enlightened than our parents' and grandparents' generations, that we have moved so far past old fights over sex inequality, and as such, moved past the need for an open dialogue and honest discussion about sexism. But the truth is right in front of us… and it sucks. A minute on Twitter under the trending hashtag #YesAllWomen was enough to get my blood boiling and my heart pounding. Countless accounts of rape, domestic violence, intimidation, human trafficking, forced prostitution, institutionalized sexism and story after story of shared human experience and the reality of what it often means to be a woman in this country.
Indeed, the problem is right in front of us but we continuously fail to address and misunderstand the issue. The Twitter hashtag #NotAllMen which was created in reaction to #YesAllWomen is a prime example; a male-centered counter-movement in response to women sharing their experiences. Read that again. We, as men, cannot feel threatened by women sharing their experiences. This only shows how truly ignorant we are to sex inequality. Instead, we should be mad as hell that the women in our lives are disadvantaged in ways that we are completely oblivious. We men can be extremely proficient at ignoring things that we don’t want or know how to handle, but we cannot sit back and allow societal injustice against women to be a reality. It is right in front of us, and it is about time we notice.
