To the Point
Prairie Point Staff Newsletter
Issue 9: Tuesday, September 23, 2014
We are ALL teachers.
Our mission statement begins: "Prairie Point students, teachers, and parents are a community of learners..."
One consideration made when our school mission statement was being revised was the best word to use that defines the staff of Prairie Point Elementary School. The conversation revolved specifically around using "teachers" versus "staff." Because our mission statement is designed to include all members of the Prairie Point Community in defining our shared purpose, there was a fear that using the term "teacher" might seem exclusive.
And I have to ask this question: "Aren't we all teachers?"
When I think about some of the people who have been my own personal "teachers," only a few have been a classroom teacher by job description. Rather, these are people who have had a profound impact on my life. They are people who have taught me what it means to be loved and to love someone, who have taught me things that are at the core of my character, who have taught me courage and integrity, and who have ultimately influenced my journey to be a better me.
When I watch every staff member at Prairie Point at work, I am struck by the passion with which they carry out the mission of Prairie Point - by the way they influence the learning and growth of all children. I'm amazed at the way all adults here use their specific role to build strong relationships, to support and guide children toward fulfilling their own unique potential. I'm amazed at the way all of you treat each child as an individual who is worthy of dignity and care. We know that sometimes children are facing hidden challenges that we can't even begin to imagine, and I love watching the way each of you provide them the tools they need to overcome those challenges.
Being a true teacher is more than a job title, or a position, or a paycheck. It's a calling. At Prairie Point, we are ALL teachers.
