Hembree Highlights
January 8, 2021
Note from Mrs. Smith
Every week I feel like I start this letter with an “Oh WOW” or “What a week!” This week is no exception. This week has been fraught with disbelief as we watched the events at the Capitol. COVID has continued to interrupt daily lives and cause serious illness to so many. I am still hopeful that 2021 will bring about positive change. I know that I may wear rose-colored glasses, but I think that is why I am called to education. I choose to be hopeful in our future. I see the future in our students’ faces every day. I want to redirect your attention away from what is going on in the world around us to what is going on in our Hawk community and more specifically in the faces of your little ones and/or not-so-little ones. When I look at them, I see HOPE. I want you to take a moment and look into those eyes and remind them we all see hope in them.
That is why the work of Hembree Springs is oh so important. We, the collective village, are tasked with the most important job to prepare our young for the world because they will one day change it. Our teachers take that to heart. They do this with a passion that amazes me. They are such a key to your child’s success. AND as I have said many times this year, this is also true for you as parents. I know that you have been given news today that impacts your families in very significant ways. You will be supporting your child for another week of learning next week at home. This is another example of your role in our hope for the future. You wear every hat, and you meet your child’s needs every day. You have supported that educational role this academic year more than ever! Thank you to everyone in this village!
In closing, a year is made up of 52 weeks or 365 days. So even when we have a bad day or week, we will have better days and weeks to come this year. 2021 will be a great year because we are in this together. I truly believe that this community can handle anything life throws at it. Please know that WE are here for you! We will work to support your child and your family. Don’t hesitate to reach out because we are your village.
Happy New Year!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

From Our PTA
Thank you!
We would like to give a HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers who came out on December 29th to “Help Feed Those in Need”. We want to also thank the Atlanta Community Food Bank who provided us with 14,000 lbs of food that the volunteers sorted and distributed to the Hembree Springs, Elkins Pointe, and Milton High School community.
Special thanks go out to our Principal AJ Smith and Heidi Forsyth for each spending 10 hours straight at school to make this event a successful one!
Let's Celebrate!
We know our teachers & staff go above and beyond every day! During the pandemic, this has been especially true with so many challenges to accommodate the new safety and learning needs. Now more than ever we need to celebrate! While this will not be quite the same as years past, there are still some really great ways to celebrate from a socially safe distance.
With a pandemic in progress, volunteers are NOT allowed in the building at this time. Take a look at the sign up for some great ideas and sign up today to help coordinate a celebration for your class: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054fadad2faafd0-20202021
Please contact staffbirthday@hembreespringspta.org if you have any questions or ideas to add to our list. We appreciate your input!
Time to Commit!
Do you enjoy being part of the Hembree Springs community? Are you a financial wizard? Do you love writing people and asking for money? Are you a tech geek? Do you thrive on supporting good causes and advocating for others? Are you a parent interested in your child’s education? Are you an organization wizard who enjoys planning events? If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes” then we need you!
The PTA is in search of volunteers to be a part of the Nominating Committee. This committee is responsible for recommending potential candidates for the 2020-2021 PTA Board. All members are invited and encouraged to get involved in this important process. If you are interested in helping find members or joining next year’s PTA board yourself, please contact: nominatingcommittee@hembreespringspta.org
In order to make sure the nominating committee members have time to be selected, the Winter General PTA Meeting has been rescheduled from January 12th to February 16th. The nominating committee actively seeks out individuals to fill open roles on the board and presents the final slate at the Spring PTA General Meeting.
