Second Grade News
December 4-8
Similes and Metaphors
- This week in reading second graders learned the difference between a simile and a metaphor. They made elves using similes.
- They also found similes and metaphors in popular Christmas songs.
- The students are working on identifying the setting, characters, problems, and solutions in stories.
- Practice at home: during your child's reading time, have them spot similes or metaphors and share them with you.
Telling Time
- The students are continuing to practice telling time to the quarter hour.
- They are learning the time of day certain activities take place. They learned that at noon the clock turns to P.M. and at midnight the clock turns to A.M.
- Practice at home: ask what time of day your child completes a certain activity and have them answer with A.M. or P.M.
Force and Motion
To finish up our unit on force and motion, students had to design a sleigh that would slide down a ramp and carry a weighted object. There were some amazing designs!
The class discussed the engineering process and planned out what might work and what would not work. Second graders worked really hard to plan out how weight would slow the sleigh down or if the weigh shifted it could tip the sleigh.
