Newsletter #2: Sharing the Planet
UOI 6: Sharing the Planet
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
Central idea: Living things have needs which help them grow and stay healthy..
Key concepts: Reflection, Form, Responsibility
Related concepts: Characteristics, structures, similarities, differences, animals, behaviors, needs
Lines of inquiry
- Characteristics of living things (Reflection)
- Needs of plants and animals (Form)
- How to protect the well-being of living things (Responsibility)
UOI Summative:
Summative:
During the unit students have been identifying the characteristics of living and non-living things. Through various activities they have explored how to classify things into living and non-living categories. Using their observational skills to identify how they know something is a living or non-living thing will be visiting pets in other classrooms. They will observe and identify characteristics that classify the animals as living things. Students will ask and answer questions about the needs of the animals, characteristics and how well it is being taken care of (well-being). They will look to see if animals are breathing, where do they live, what kinds of food do they eat, do they need water, how do they move? All observations will be documented in their journals through drawing and illustrations.
Along with the observation of animals, students have been observing plants and identifying the characteristics of why plants are living? Using online resources students have been researching animal and plant habitats.
As Scientists, they will be asked to observe and identify in their journals:
· What is a living thing?
· How do you know the animal is a living thing? (evidence through observation)
· How do you know the plant is a living thing? (evidence through observation)
· Why is a rock not a living thing?
· Name 4 things that are living and 4 things that are not living.
After this research and documentation, students will make a poster to show understanding of how living things grow and stay healthy and alive. The poster will also show how living things cannot survive when their needs are not met. Students will illustrate one healthy living thing and one unhealthy living thing. One illustration should be labeled with characteristics and needs for being healthy and growing and the other showing how living things can become unhealthy and decline.
Students will answer:
· The characteristics of living things are ____________________________________________________________ .
· Living things need ________________________ to survive and be healthy.
· We can help living things by ______________________________________.

What have We Been doing????
Math: Modules 4 and 5
Completed Module 5 - Numbers 10-20 and counting to 100
- Students learned how to count numbers 1-100 in both ascending and descending order. They used blocks to count steps going up and steps coming down, they put teddy bears in order using size for ordering numbers and solved puzzles to find solutions to complete a picture or build a robot.
- As "hungry alligators' students compared numbers between 1 and 20 using greater than and less than signs EX: 2>1. They played games and followed musical activities to practice showing their understanding of greater than and less than.
- Practiced understanding of ordinal numbers (first second,third... through tenth) through activities, games, and word problems
- Using online resources at abcya.com and turtlediary.org, students worked with partners to solve addition, subtraction and some multiplication number sentences (equations).
- They composed and decomposed numbers to find how many tens and ones were represented. For Ex: 17= ten ones and 7 ones
Working on Module 6:
- Composing simple shapes to form larger shapes. For example, “Can you join these two triangles with full sides touching to make a rectangle?”
Analyzing comparing, creating and composing shapes using 2D, 3D, flat, solid shapes with different types of objects and materials.
Modeling shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.
ENGLISH
READING:
- With partners, students continue to practice Daily 5 reading activities to reinforce and target specific reading strategies and goals.
- Each day students practice using sentence strips to make and change sentences to match pictures or drawings.
WRITING:
- Students practiced writing letters to their friends identifying a special characteristic about their friend.
- Students worked on individual stories about their favorite animals. Using online resources they researched an animals and learned about its characteristics and habitat. They then illustrated and labeled it as a living thing identifying its needs.
- Students have practiced collaborative writing with peers learning to recheck and edit their work. Checking for understanding and looking for details.
- Developing as writers, students have been working on retelling stories, events and facts about living and non-living things.
LANGUAGE:
- Once again with drawing and illustration students have shown their understanding of "more than one" by adding appropriate endings. (bed(s), toy(s), cloth(es).
- Students continue to practice identifying opposites and demonstrating understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their opposites (antonyms).
Science
Science: Animals two by two:
- As a class we took a walk outside to observe the living and non-living things around our school. Students illustrated and labeled the things they saw into two categories.
- Students went digging for worms outside using cooperation and communication skills to use and share tools and discuss how to safely and gently handle the worms.
- Students have been assigned to take care of a plant at their table. They have been documenting their plants growth, its need and how responsible their tablemates have been helping it grow and be healthy.
- Enthusiastically students have been bringing in worms, snails, and slugs to add to our class terrarium. Each day they take turns with partners to observe and any changes. A few times they have placed the worms on racing sheets to see which is longer and faster.
- Students have enjoyed learning facts and myths about worms from the "Kratt's brothers" online resource activities and videos. After listening to facts they created their own 'fun facts" about worms.
- Students have planted seeds for green beans or peas and flowers.
