Happy New Year Seadog Families!
We closed out 2018 by celebrating Mrs. Gravely's 97th birthday, participated in our annual Holiday Sing Along, delivered care packages to the sailors of the DDG 107 USS Gravely, and were treated with a concert by the Gravely Groovers and Percussion group.
In January we look forward to our PTO Game Night / Literacy night which is all about our school-wide Read Aloud of The World According to Humphrey, we will participate in the Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope For Heart), Gravely Spelling Bee, Strings Concert, and the end of the Second Quarter. January also has a few student Holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr Day on January 21st, a half day for conferences on January 25th, and a teacher workday on January 28th.

In technology, the students have been researching different holidays celebrated around the world. They are using a program called Wixie to help organize their information and then present it.
In math, we began our multiplication and division unit. This unit is a hands on unit where students are able to use a variety of manipulatives to build their understanding of the skills. We look forward to continuing this unit when we return in January.

Reading Room
Each grade level has been reading The World According to Humphrey, and visiting Humphrey in the library. On the evening of January 11th, with the help of our PTO, we will have our family literacy night with activities related this book. We hope you and your family can join us!
As we are now well into this school year, it is important students have established and are maintaining good reading routines. While this is not assigned homework, but a recommendation of best practices, we hope students read because they want to read. A good goal is at least 20 minutes a night. Even hearing a story is advantageous because it helps one hear stories read fluently. Fluent reading is what we do every time we read a favorite story. Conveying meaning with the rise and fall and changes in our voice helps us understand the story even better. Rereading text is also a great way to practice fluency. Advisory Council
What is the Advisory Council? The advisory council is a group parents that represent the different areas within Gravely boundaries, along with staff members, and the schools administration. The Advisory Council holds monthly meetings to provide input on matters relating to the school: from finance to instruction, to school improvement. Throughout the year they work collaboratively to highlight our programs, monitor the implementation of our School Plan, and ensure a high quality education for all of our stakeholders.
How does the council affect me? If you have a concern, see a need, have a suggestion, or are pleased about something going on at Gravely, then let us know. Please contact a member of the council or come to a council meeting and share your thoughts. Also, 15 minutes of the advisory council meeting will be designated citizens’ time and any staff member, parent, or member of the council may address the advisory council. Each person will have 3 minutes.
Below is a list of the advisory council members for 2018-2019. If you would like to recognize something great that is occurring at Gravely, or have our committee discuss a concern you may have, feel free to stop by for our monthly meeting, or email your feedback to any of the members listed below.
