What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy or HBOT is part of hyperbaric medicine. This therapy uses a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which contains oxygen at a higher pressure than normal atmospheric pressure. The entire unit consists of a pressure chamber and a provision to deliver 100% oxygen. The chamber could be of flexible or rigid construction. Trained personnel would perform this therapy with predetermined schedules by continuous monitoring of the patient and adjusting the treatment schedule as per individual requirements.
HBOT or oxygen chamber therapy has been in use to treat decompression sickness. This treatment is highly effective in conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning or gas gangrene. Recent research has suggested that it could be effective in other conditions like multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy but there have been insufficient evidence on exact effectiveness. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) of the United States has approved hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the following indications.
