G.A.T.E.WAYS
January Newsletter
Southwest Elementary G.A.T.E.
Over the next several weeks, we will be traveling the world and comparing cultures with eight different versions of Cinderella, including Rough-Face Girl, Korean Cinderella, Yeh-Shen, Vasilisa, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters and more. We started our exploration with what is considered the oldest variant of the Cinderella story, The Egyptian Cinderella. Over the next week, students will be completing a report on either a literature-related or non-fiction topic related to the story. They will ultimately choose their topic and product according to their interests and then complete the project in class (ex. I will compose a song about the products and crops of Egypt).
Bloom's Taxonomy
1. Knowledge-The ability to recognize, memorize, or recall information. It is the easiest level of thinking.
2. Comprehension-This is the lowest level of simple understanding. Students begin to attach meaning to facts and information.
3. Application-This is the ability to use or apply knowledge in a new situation.
4. Analysis-The skill of taking apart information to identify the component parts and understand relationships.
5. Synthesis-To put together elements or parts into a new whole, to create an original product.
6. Evaluation-This is the highest level of thinking in Bloom's Taxonomy. To evaluate is to judge or appraise the worth, value, or quality of an idea, an object, or an activity.
Life Lessons for Gifted Students (Seng)
* Your ideas will sometimes have excellent value, and like anything of value others may occasionally steal them. In the end though, people usually know whose ideas and creations they were.
* In school, it is very likely that you will be expected to tutor and teach other students instead of having the opportunity to use that time learning new content. Make sure to devote time, even outside of school, to learn new things anyway.
Brain Teaser Tuesdays
Based on research, some of the associated benefits of brain teasers are:
* Boosts brain activity
* Provides emotional satisfaction and sense of accomplishment
* Enhances memory and processing speed
* Helps slow the decline and reduce the risk for dementia
* Improves concentration
* Reduces boredom
