Back2School events
Special thanks to our friends at Public School Options for securing the Heron Pavilion at Lakefront Marina Park in Kissimmee for our Sail into School event. New and returning families gathered to create their own (miniature) sailboats and then race them on our spillways. Several teachers joined us while students dressed in their nautical best. Take-away flyers with reference to motion and force (tides and wind) were available for enrichment activities.
PINELLAS - HILLSBOROUGH - PASCO
The Birds of Prey educational program at Boyd Hill Nature Center in St. Petersburg proved to be an amazing time for all while the private tram tour brought us up close (very close!) to juvenile alligators, osprey, gopher tortoises and armadillo. What a great morning with FLVA families!
Tropicana Field was the place to be as the Tampa Bay Rays played the New York Yankees. Hot dogs, cotton candy and lots of smiles were all up to the plate as FLVA families enjoyed a night at the ball park. New friends were made.
Our own FLVA mom. Alicia Wilson, was the Certified Naturalist as we headed out of Tarpon Springs on the Odyssey Cruise to Anclote Key Island. On the way, Ms Wilson provided us with the local history of the area including pirates that frequented the area. Beach landing on the island signaled the beginning of a Treasure Hunt. We were fortunate to see wild dolphins, pelicans and castrel. What an amazing way for our families to meet each other and start the school year!
DUVAL & CLAY
A very special program including Willie, a real opossum, a 6 ft rat snake and baby alligator were all part of the Back2School program at Tree Hill Nature Center. Teachers, students, parents and grandparents were able to touch each of these animals and learn more about their environment. Following the program we made our way to the goats, found a snake in a bush and visited the lab and touch tank with turtles and fish. This was a special day for everyone!
BROWARD & PALM BEACH
A morning Meet & Greet is planned at Charnow Community Park in Hollywood. We'll have games and beach activities for everyone!
We'll wrap up the month with an All-Skate in Lake Worth. In lieu of an entry fee to skare, we are asking for a donation of a new toothbrush and full-sized toothpaste or pair/pack of new socks from each student attending. Donations will be given to a local non-profit group that helps school-aged children. Notes of encouragement with donations are encouraged.
