A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week during Writing Workshop, students continued to write personal narratives. They are focusing on beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending each sentence with a punctuation mark. This helps make their writing easy to read. We learned the difference between a watermelon story and a seed story. Writers have learned that our stories need to be a small moment (seed), not a huge part of our life (watermelon). Rather than writing about an entire day at the zoo, they should zoom in on one special part of their day. Next week, students will learn ways to bring their stories to life. Writers bring their stories to life by making their characters move and talk. We will work on adding dialogue to our stories so we know what the characters are saying. Next week, we will also focus on telling our stories in itsy bitsy steps, rather than whole chunks on the pages. Ask your writer what stories they are working on!
Math: This week, we will focused on finding the missing part (addend). Students learned to solve problems such as 6 + ___ = 8. They also worked with number sentences where the whole number is first (8 = 6 + ___). Next week, we will focus on the meaning of the equal sign. They will learn that both sides of the equal sign need to be the same amount.
Word Study: This week, we focused on the short u sound. Students worked with consonant-vowel-consonant words both in isolation and in various decodable texts. We also worked with the base word "jump" and thought of words related to that word (jumps, jumping, jumped, jumper, etc). Next week, we will focus on the short vowel o.
math pictures, number bonds, and number sentences help us solve a math story!

Holiday party volunteers needed!
Hello! We are excited to welcome parents to our holiday parties! We are looking for volunteers to plan and attend our 3 classroom parties: Fall, Winter, & Valentines. We are only able to have 5 volunteers per party. If you are interested in planning and attending/running a party, please add your name to the sign up. Once names of interested parents are collected, I will randomly select 5 for each party. Times are approximate...we do not have exact party times yet. More details about planning the parties will come for those volunteers as the dates get closer. Thank you!
Please use the link below to show interest in planning and attending the parties. I will collect names until Thursday, October 5, then randomly select and send out the names of the lucky volunteers!
