Pride Program Update
Technovation
This year we started a Technovation team. Technovation is a program for girls interested in computer science. Technovation focuses on a process to build, market and pitch their own mobile app. We have two groups creating two separate apps. Our first app is centered around the idea of recycling. It is going to provide the user with information about what can be recycled and where it can be recycled in SE Minnesota. It will provide locations, phone numbers, hours, and turn by turn directions to those locations. Our second app is going to be a platform for people to donate and request items. The user can login and either post items that they are willing to donate, or they can request items that they need. The focus is to support families in need that may have difficulty acquiring things like clothing or school supplies.
Our girls have learned a lot so far. We have great mentors from our community who are guiding our girls. They are working together and combining their strengths to accomplish our task as a team. We are currently building our prototype Apps. Our submission deadline is April 26th. We are working hard to be finished by then.
Academic Triathlon
U.S. Academic Triathlon is a creative thinking team competition that teaches and rewards creative and divergent thought processes, cooperative brainstorming, general intellect, leadership and a "flare" for the dramatics. Five-person teams compete in three distinct events at a USAT meet. Those events are:
P.A.R.T.Y in the Box: A theatrical performance challenge
Mind Sprints: Three short-term (10 minute) creative thinking problems that may challenge students verbally, visually, spatially or kinesthetically
Face-Off: Oral and written questions comprise this academic and concrete factual recall event
About 220 teams, grade 5-8, participated in U.S. Academic Triathlon last year in Minnesota alone. U.S. Academic Triathlon is a charter member of the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation League of Competitions, and is affiliated with the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Education.
