Transition to 9th grade
Missouri Student Survey
School districts throughout Missouri have been asked to participate in the Missouri Student Survey every other year since 1991. With the inclusion of a violence component in 1995, the instrument became the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) Survey. This year the Missouri Institute of Mental Health is asking districts to collect data from students at each grade level from sixth grade through twelfth grade.
The results of the survey are used to assist the school district in the evaluation and planning of its comprehensive school health program, prevention activities for students, and provide information necessary for local grant applications. Specifically, the results of the survey indicate the extent of tobacco, drug and alcohol use, as well as bullying, mental health, and other information. Here are two questions from the survey:
During the past 12 months, how many times were you in a physical fight?
During the past 30 days, on how many days did you smoke cigarettes?
Students are not asked to identify themselves and no individual student responses are reported or maintained.
If you would prefer that your child opt out of this survey, please contact Mrs. Horstmeier or Mrs. Burfield no later than January 10th, 2020.

Needing to see the school counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.
Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.
Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208

Arts Alive: We have completed auditions for Into the Woods, Jr.! The cast list will be shared out on this weekend! Stay tuned!

CONCERT ATTIRE: khaki pants, black shoes, and a black choir polo shirt. If you do not have one, you may purchase one from me for $15. These polos are the same as those worn by FMS choirs for the past several years. Students may certainly borrow or buy one from a student who was in FMS choirs and no longer needs the polo.

From the Art Room
Happy New Year!
I am excited to start this new year, with returning students and several new classes this semester. Each week I will talk about what we are doing in class and what students are working on.
6th Grade:
We will introduce the layout of the art room, and we will be covering expectations and procedures in the first few days, then we will jump right in to artmaking, with our first objective ELO5 Students will explain the connections between visual arts and other curriculum areas. Students will learn about optical line and this will carry over into our next objective as we will put it into practice.
Students will work through creative problem solving skills and learn about the basic elements of line and ways it can be used in art.
7th Grade Semester:
We will go over expectations and procedures in the first few days, and we will immediately jump into our first objective ELO2: Students will use subject matter and themes in art. Students will delve into “art about me” concepts and they will borrow ideas from their greatest resource, themselves, and learn about the art of illumination.
7th Grade All year. Students will begin our next objective ELO 1: students will select and apply media techniques and processes. Students will be starting our “Old Barn” project, and learning about value and line on a much deeper level. This project takes several weeks.
8th Grade all year:
Students will begin work on their next objective and we will be creating a personal Coat of Arms using mixed media as well as learning how to age paper.
8th Grade Semester:
We will go over the expectations and procedures for the first few days, and we will start on our first objective ELO2: Students will use subject matter and theme. Students wil learn about functional art and plan and design Surprise lockers. Their lockers will be interactive, and the insides will be the surprise.
I am looking forward to working with new classes and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate in contacting me.

The FMS Thrive Hive
The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:25 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.
The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.
Items currently needed for the store are:
Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.
As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.
Snack items: Nutella snack packs, Slim jims and pop tarts.
Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.
We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.
All other items are appreciated as well.
If you would like to donate, please call Fulton Middle School at 573-590-8200.
