RSL ACADEMY RETURN TO LEARN
Useful Information to Help Plan for a Safe Return to School
SCHOOL RE-OPENING PLAN AT A GLANCE
We hope you have been enjoying a safe and healthy summer break. We understand that there are many questions in anticipation of returning to school this August. Providing our students and school community a safe and healthy learning environment is of the utmost importance to us and we will continually strive to maintain the highest levels of safety and cleanliness as we move toward bringing students back into the classrooms and common areas of RSL Academy.
Our plan is to resume school in the classroom on Monday, August 17. We will continue with our Flex Friday schedule with Monday and Thursday as eight period class days, Tuesdays as odd class days and Wednesdays even class days.
Some of the key points for returning to school are as follows:
- Directional flow and 6ft social distancing where allowable will be designated by signage, to include, entrance and exit points, up and down staircases, etc.
- Faculty will be present in the halls during passing periods to help traffic flow.
- There will be limited departure allowed from classrooms during class time and personal electronic devices must be left in the classroom should a student depart the room.
- The last five minutes of each class period will be dedicated to sanitizing.
- All classrooms will have hand sanitizer.
- Maintenance staff will continually clean high touch surfaces throughout the day with a deep cleaning and sanitizing to happen each Friday.
- All students and faculty will be required to wear face coverings, this includes during class time, during passing periods, if riding the bus and while waiting in line for lunch.
- RSL Food Services will continue to serve lunch daily, it will be a grab and go style and students will be directed by floor signage on where to stand while in line.
- We have added a third lunch hour to help with distancing in the cafeteria and all lunch periods will be shortened to twenty minutes.
- Visitors to RSL Academy will be extremely limited to essential visitors only. All visitors will be required to check in at the office, sanitize and wear a face covering. Non-essential visitors will be turned away.
For students who identify as high risk, have immediate family members in their homes that may be high risk or for those unsure about education in the classroom at this time, we will offer a Distance Learning platform. Distance Learning, will not be "online learning" as we saw in the spring, rather it will be fully immersed classroom participation happening from a distance. We have upgraded our classrooms with full video and audio enhancement allowing students to log in to their classes during the scheduled class time and participate remotely with the teacher and their classmates. In the interest of health and safety, we have determined students not comfortable in the classroom will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities at this time. Should your student be in a high-risk situation, this can be addressed on a case by case basis with the appropriate administrator.
Some of the key points should you select Distance Learning are as follows:
- Students selecting Distance Learning will be given a daily class schedule and be required to log in and be present during class time. Students that do not show up on the teachers smart tv will be marked absent from class that day.
- Students selecting Distance Learning will be required to spend a minimum of four-weeks participating in Distance Learning. Should they desire to return to the classroom after the four week period, they will be allowed to do so.
- Any student attending "traditional" classes and changes their mind opting for Distance Learning, may do so at any time, but will be required to uphold the four-week Distance Learning timeline.
- Any student that particpiates in soccer and would traditionally have a class block, can opt for one release period and one Edgenuity class, or two edgenuity classes, to fill that block. Should your student return to traditional classroom learning, they will be slotted back in and will be required to finish their edgenuity class on their own time or can withdrawal from the class with no credit.
- Any student that may opt for Distance Learning will not be penalized and will have the same opportunnity for athletic and extra curricular participation when they return to the classroom.
