PRESCHOOL ORIENTATION
Year 2 of Preschool Expansion
A Preschool Orientation Session was held this week in the Thomas E. Harrington Middle School Auditorium. The event was well attended as Danielle Hosey, Supervisor of Early Childhood Education, and the program's two Preschool Instructional Coaches, Paula Garguillo and Michelle Njagu presented on the developmentally appropriate activities and curriculum objectives that would be the focus in each classroom.
In September of 2022, the Mount Laurel Schools was awarded preschool funding to begin to expand free full day high quality preschool to all 3- and 4-year old eligible children in the community. Next year, year two of the program, the district will be expanding from 16 classrooms to 26 through their partnerships with high quality early childhood providers located in the community. The district's five-year strategic plan for preschool is to grow the program so that every eligible child can benefit from free full day preschool. Families in attendance were successfully selected through a competitive lottery for the available seats.

Fifty one students and their families attended a fun-filled evening of activities!
HILLSIDE HOSTS
BREAKFAST FOR THE BRAVE
Hillside Elementary fourth graders chose to host a breakfast (school-wide project) for current parents/guardians and immediate family members serving in the military.
With the help of the staff, fourth graders were responsible for planning, preparing, and executing the event as the leaders of Hillside. All K-4 students had their hands in this special event as the entire student population prepared decorations for the breakfast.
Lenape Regional High School ROTC Color Guard provided an honor guard for the event.
It was an amazing event for the guests and a valuable community service lesson for the students.
"GENERATIONAL GEMS"
PRESENTED AT HMS
Dr. Mortimer, Grade 7 Social Studies Teacher, held the first in-person book presentation at Harrington Middle School since COVID. Every year, while covering primary and secondary source differentiation and analysis, Dr. Mortimer challenges his students to uncover their own primary sources within their family's history.
Students identify objects, ranging anywhere from religious statues, to cooking appliances, and even folded American flags, given for honorable service in the US Military. Students write about these primary source artifacts, how they represent their family's unique history, and why they are so special and sentimental. Earlier this week, students were given the opportunity to present their entries in the book entitled "Generational Gems" written by 7th grade Harrington Students, to an audience full of parents and loved ones. To keep the night running smoothly, Dr. Mortimer even asked his audience historical trivia questions while they transitioned between presenter groups, and a few videos (created by Dr. Mortimer's students) were also shared.
Overall, this was a wonderful evening which allowed students to share artifacts about their family's history, and gave everyone in the audience the opportunity to learn about customs and cultures which may differ from their own.
