SLE Weekly Update April 22, 2022
Good afternoon East families,
Spring is a busy time at SLEHS! This week, our students participated in M-STEP and NWEA testing and we want to thank our entire student body for their cooperation and patience as we administered these tests. On Thursday, our seniors participated in a Senior Career Expo where they had opportunities to attend several career-related workshops to hear from experts in various industries. The Flying Toasters (our robotics team) have been in Houston TX., participating in the FIRST Robotics World Championship which includes international competitors. Our students have had the opportunity to interact with teams from all over the world. If you are interested in seeing what this competition is all about, please visit their website by clicking here.
On Thursday of next week, we will be conducting our third and final required ALICE drill for the 2021-22 school year. This drill will provide specific information regarding a threat to a specific area in the building so that staff and students can utilize their knowledge to respond in the manner best appropriate based on their location and capabilities. This drill will emphasize the importance of listening to the adult(s) in the room. To conclude each drill, the adult(s) will debrief with students.
Please come out and see our amazing drama department as they perform the hit musical "Grease". Opening night is Thursday, April 28 and it runs through May 1.
Have a great weekend!

INFO ON GUEST SPEAKER IRENE MILLER - TO EDIT
On April 26th the South Lyon East Social Studies department is honored to host Holocaust survivor Irene Miller. She will be telling her life story in an assembly for all World Studies students. Ms. Miller’s goals in speaking with the students include: giving a face to a dark chapter of human history, promoting tolerance and diversity, inspiring positive action, and empowering people to overcome obstacles in life. The Social Studies department is pleased to have the opportunity to teach the following curricular standards in such a unique and meaningful way:
7.1.3 Genocide in the 20th Century – differentiate genocide from other atrocities and forms of mass killing and explain its extent, causes, and consequences in the 20th century and to the present.
7.2.4 Responses to Genocide – investigate the responses to Hitler’s “Final Solution” policy by the Allies, the U.S. government, international organizations, and individuals.
If you would like to learn more about Ms. Miller and her experiences, please visit her website: www.irenemillerspeaker.com. Her memoir, Into No Man’s Land is available on Amazon and will also be available for purchase for $15 on the day of the assembly. What she can convey in the time she has with the students is limited, but her complete life story is in the memoir.
If individual families would like to contribute to an honorarium for Ms. Miller, South Lyon East will be collecting donations. Students may bring donations to the main office for the remainder of the month of April.

Graduation Update
This year’s graduation ceremony will be held at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth on Saturday, June 11th at 4:00 PM. Seating for families is not limited, so tickets will not be required for the ceremony. We made the decision to change our venue this year because the current Covid protocols at EMU include restrictions that do not align with the protocols we have in place for South Lyon Community Schools. USA Hockey Arena has hosted graduation ceremonies for many years and we believe this location will provide a climate-controlled environment that ensures an opportunity for the families and loved ones of our graduates to enjoy the ceremony without concerns about limited tickets or challenging and unpredictable weather conditions. We will send more information to our graduating seniors very soon!

To make the application process easier to submit and process we have converted everything into a Google Form. No more emailing or sharing applications via Google Drive. We will not accept hand-written or scanned responses. We are not accepting applications from Freshman at this time. The form reflects this by not having the freshman grad year option.
