Faculty Meeting Wednesday @ 3:45
Extended Day Starts TODAY
In order to recapture precious instructional time lost due to Hurricane Irma, the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, October 2, 2017, through Monday, October 30, 2017.
DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.
The decision to extend the school day was a collaborative effort across all DCSD divisions. In addition, Dr. Green is empowered to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.” A primary goal was not to impact Fall Break or Winter Break for both families and employees who may have commitments based on the approved school year calendar. Also, with the unpredictability of North Georgia weather in the winter, the district does not want to use all its inclement weather days before the onset of that season.
Druid Hills High will extend each period by 5 minutes. Here is the tentative bell schedule:
8:09-9:44 1st
9:50-11:25 2nd
11:31-1:45 3rd
- A Lunch 11:25-11:55
- B Lunch 12:03-12:33
- C Lunch 1:15-1:45
IB Schedule
Lunch 11:25-11:55
3rd A/B 12:00-1:43
4th A/B 1:47-3:30

Ignite U - Action Required for Teachers
Last year's focus was on awareness of the district's tools. This year's focus is on how to use these tools in your classroom. Although the this year's training is a little more intense, you'll hopefully learn a lot because it is also more collaborative.
So, what do you have to do?
- Complete 2 Mini Courses (already in your courses in VERGE) by October 31, 2017.
- Chromebooks in the Classroom
- Communicate and Collaborate with VERGE
- Implement 5 Tech Checks within your instructional practices using VERGE by May 15, 2018.

Governor's Honors Program
The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program with the only required and expected costs to the students being travel expenses to and from the interviews, a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms, and spending money as desired during the program.
Druid Hills High is fortunate to have students participate in this special program every year, and we want to continue this tradition! The process begins with teachers recommending your most gifted of students for district-level consideration.
Here is the timeline for district-level process:
- October 2-10 Teachers recommend GHP candidates through the Google Doc. Here's the link for the list of recommended students.
- October 11 GHP Meeting at 8:30 for GHP Prospective Candidates - Media Center
- October 11-18
- Student completes application
- Counselors complete their section
- Recommending teachers complete their section
- October 19-20 Ms. Huffman and Ms. Cunningham check applications for completion
- October 24 Ms. Huffman delivers applications to AIC
- October 25-27 Students notified via email regarding district-level interviews
- October 30-November 9 District-level interviews
- November 16-17 Candidates advancing to state-level consideration announced
We will discuss this during Wednesday's Faculty meeting. Please contact me with questions. Thank you in advance!

Email Phishing Scam - Please review
DCSD has been made aware of an EMAIL Phishing Scam. Employees are sent what looks to be a legitimate email (they often appear as though they are sent from the school district) asking for Personal information (usually pertaining to direct deposit information) and to click on a link in the email . Once an employee verifies the information, hackers gain access to the employee’s direct deposit information within the school district. Employees wouldn’t even know anything happened until payday. They then reset the direct deposit to reroute their salaries. This scam has already hit one metro district, as well as at least two other large school districts around the country.
Information Technology is asking all employees to not Click on any of the links that are imbedded in this type of EMAIL and not confirm any personal information instead delete the EMAIL immediately.
