What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts- We are finishing our unit on Literary Non-Fiction. We have been learning in first grade how readers have different purposes for reading different genres, for example reading narrative for enjoyment and expository to learn new information about a topic. In this unit we will introduce a new genre of narrative non-fiction, which are stories written in narrative form but present information that is factual such as biographies or autobiographies.
Social Studies-We will continue learning about historical figures who have made important impacts on our communities, states, and nation. We will be reading biographies and autobiographies on figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Francis Scott Key, Eleanor Roosevelt, and more.
Spelling/Words Their Way:
We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Tuesday. The words for List 24 are always, gave, has, once, soon. We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the words does and try.
It is a short week with the early release- we will not have a Words Their Way Sort.
Math: We will be continuing our geometry unit on the study of 2D shapes. We will be working on fractions to describe the partition of a whole figure into equal sized portions or fair shares. We will be partitioning circles and rectangles into two or four fair shares. We will be using vocabulary such as; halves, half of, fourths, and quarters to describe the process. We will also be identifying examples and non-examples.
Science: We will be continuing our unit on the characteristics and needs of plants and animals. In this unit we will be studying and investigation the difference between living and non-living things based on their basic needs and ability to produce offspring. We will investigate how the characteristics of an animal are related to where it lives, how it moves and what it eats. We will also be learning how to identify and compare parts of plants.
