Speak Out for your Freedom to Read

Celebrate your freedom to read by reading one of most challenged books of 2017.

  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is one of most popular books in our library. It was number 8 of the most challenged books of 2017.
  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is another popular book in our library that was censored. Censorship occurs all around you.
  • In Imperial, Pennsylvania, Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle was censored. 200 students signed a petition to keep the book on the high school's reading list.
  • The freedom to read is protected by the First Amendment. In Texas v. Johnson, U. S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan said "the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable." To find out more, read Field Report 2016: Banned and Challenged Books by Robert P. Doyle.
