Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will continue working on our 11 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. The fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous facts: 1's through 6's, 9's and 10's. We will have our accuracy check on the 11 facts this Friday.
Science-We began our "Secret of Flight" unit the week before fall break. We have a real treat on Monday with Jeremy Holloway coming to visit with us and talk to us about his job as a Southwest Airline pilot. We will do research on Tuesday and Wednesday on different types of paper airplanes who have the greatest flight times and the greatest distances. Students will have to opportunity to recreate these paper airplanes or test a design of their own. We will end the week with a competition on the greatest distance and the longest flight design. It will be a great week of learning and fun!
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--Our focus this week is on learning the five non-fiction text structures: description, compare/contrast, sequence, problem/solution, and cause/effect. We will work daily on these to determine them in writing and to write in the appropriate style. We will be using many tools to help us in our exploration as we have a "text structures boot camp" complete with drills.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--We will begin working in our research groups to determine a research topic and set up goals for research. We will spend the week looking at books and online sites on google classroom for information.
