Mini Relay For Life- Mickey Head Fundraiser
A Note from Mrs. DeCamp
March is off to an amazing start! We have already had so many awesome events occur since we have returned from February break! I had a CRAZY amount of fun playing Donkey Basketball to raise money for the PTSO at the High School. Also, we held our annual Math and Science Night this past week! We had excellent attendance and so many great learning activities to work through with families, friends, and teachers!
The fun has only begun! This month, we will continue to celebrate music in our schools with our Grades 5-12 Band and Chorus concerts. This coming weekend, we will be holding a family movie matinee to raise money for our Mini-Relay for Life which we hold at the end of the school year. I look forward to seeing you there!
As we get into the month of March, I like to remind you of the importance of attendance more than ever! Not only are our students in grades 3-6 going to be able to have a chance to show what they know later this month during our ELA state assessments, but of the grade levels (PK-6) are working on some deep new learning and every day in attendance matters tremendously!
As our district policy requires, we will continue to mail home notifications for every 5 days absent and for every 5 days tardy. Remember, school begins promptly at 8:15 am but students are welcome to come in as early as 7:30 am for a healthy breakfast and time to get ready to start their day! Don't hesitate to reach out if you are having difficulty with getting your child(ren) to school as we have a wonderfully talented group of people here who are ready and willing to help!
Have a great March!

From The School Counselor's Desk
As a new school counselor, I have made it my goal over the course of this year to make connections with all my students preK-6th in a meaningful way. This has been done either through going into their classroom to see what they are working on, seeing them throughout the building or through times that I am able to take a few minutes to learn more about them when they are not hard at work. For me, I can utilize all of the school day. As a parent, we do not always have as much time as we like to make connections with our children between our work schedule, their school schedule and any extracurricular activities. I am going to let you in on a little secret that there are simple ways that you can stay connected to your child. Each day make sure to have at least one meaningful eye to eye conversation with your child. You can talk about anything to let your child know that you are there for them. Also, children can feel connected with their parents by the physical act of touch whether it is a hug, pat on the shoulder, doing their hair, or helping them fix their collar. It has been shown that doing this at least 8 times a day helps to build a solid connection with your child. Also, when they are dealing with challenges that 12 times a day helps them to feel more reassured throughout this time. Lastly, there are 9 minutes in the day that can have the greatest impact in building your connection with your child. The first 3 minutes right after they wake up. The 3 minutes after they come home from school or daycare. The last 3 minutes of the day before they go to bed. All these aspects help to make moments special and help our children to feel connected.

NYS Assessments - Math, ELA, and Science
One incredibly important part of the time between now and spring break is the preparation for the state assessments for our children in 3-6th grade. Below is the testing "window" dates:
ELA - March 24th-27th
Math - April 20th-27th
Science (4th Grade) - June 1st
NYSED has done a lot to to decrease the length of the tests from 3 sessions to 2 sessions and has eliminated the pressure of them being a "timed test" so that students can finish in whatever time they need. Although they are only 1 data point in an entire school year of learning, they are an important data point to see how our students are progressing towards proficiency in the New York State Standards.
As we get closer to the exams, I would encourage you to talk to your child about how prepared they feel they are for the tests. Have them talk you through problems and give you examples of what they are learning. What is the MOST IMPORTANT THING, is to have every student approach with a Growth Mindset to do the best they can, but not to become too nervous or be too anxious over it. Do you best! THAT is all that matters!
Children's Miracle Network
We have had many people from our community get support and help from the Children's Miracle Network. Once a year we try to give back and have a collection jug in the Main Office. Please feel free to drop of some change and help support such a wonderful organization for kids and families!

Professional Learning - To Be Better Educators!
A "break out" box is based on the concept of an escape room where you have to use clues and apply Math and ELA skills to open a lock to find a secret treasure in a box!
An Osmos app is used with an ipad in which students can draw, play games, and practice ELA and Math skills with hands on manipulatives!
Feel free to ask any of our teachers what they have learned and how much fun they have continuously growing to bring learning experiences that are rigorous and relevant to our kids!
