Powdersville Middle School - Fall Newsletter - 2022

Principal's Corner

Todd Binnicker, Principal

Welcome to our 2022-2023 school year! We had a great opening. I want to thank you for taking care of the online registration requirements before the start of school and for taking the time to attend our Open House. Attendance at our Open House on August 10 and 11 was outstanding. This shows how involved our parents are in the education process. For those who have not completed the Returning Student Registration please do so as soon as you are able. You can access it through Parent Portal and there you can update emergency contacts, medical concerns, and parent contact information. I also want to thank all of you for your patience as we continue to improve on our dismissal process and bus transportation issues.

All schools in Anderson One will dismiss early on Wednesday, September 14, and Wednesday, November 16, 2022, for TALK (Teachers Advancing Learning for Kids) Professional Development. This time allows teachers to work collaboratively in grade levels or subject areas to define essential standards, create common formative assessments, and create methods for acceleration and remediation for students.

Dismissal times are as follows:

Concrete Primary: 10:45 AM

Powdersville Elementary 11:00 AM

Powdersville Middle: 11:30 AM

Powdersville High School: 11:30 AM

Powdersville Middle School (PVMS) will continue to focus on providing rigorous academics and building positive relationships as we strive to prepare all students for the challenging academic and career/technical courses in high school. PVMS is committed to continuing the ASD1 tradition of excellence by providing world class knowledge, skills, and life characteristics based on the individual needs of each student.

Lastly, I am honored to be your middle school principal. If I can ever do anything to make your child’s learning experience better, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with each of you and wish you a wonderful school year.

Students should never cross traffic lanes. Adult supervision is provided daily until 4:00 p.m. We do realize that, on occasion, parents may be delayed due to heavy traffic, car trouble, or some other unforeseen circumstance. These middle school walkers should always use the crosswalk and follow the directions of our crossing guard. Parents will also need to fill out the permission to walk form. (See below)

We request that parents/guardians do NOT sign students out of school after 2:45 p.m., unless absolutely necessary.

Drop-Off - Students arriving to school by car are to be dropped off curbside in the car circle area (Roe Road Entrance) as early as 7:20 a.m. For safety reasons, students should not get out of the car and walk across the parking lot or through the line of cars.

These middle school walkers should always use the crosswalk and follow the directions of our crossing guard. Parents will also need to fill out the permission to walk form. (See below)

Additionally, drop\off in the parking lot in front of the school (Roe Rd. car circle), the bus loop and parking lot by the front office (Hood Rd., Driveway B), and the parking lot by the gym (Hood Rd., Driveway A) is NOT permitted.

Parenting Workshops at PVMS

Join us on September 21, 2022, for our PVMS Parenting Workshop! This month’s Workshop will focus on the social side of the “Middle School Years”. It will be a great opportunity to learn about the changes your child is experiencing socially. Maybe you have some questions we can help answer: Is there a group that your child is seeking to be part of? Why are they trying to impress so many people? Why is my child so emotional? We want to encourage you and give you some practical ways to understand the mind and emotions of an adolescent. Refreshments will be provided starting at 5:45 PM. The workshop will begin promptly at 6:00 in the library. Please enter the school using the front entrance, or the entrance closest to Powdersville Elementary. We look forward to seeing you! If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Williams at

Please fill out the form associated with the link below if you plan on attending.

Who's New

This year we welcome six new members and three returning members to Powdersville Middle School. All of our new faculty and staff are hard at work and are excited about being a part of our school family. We are excited as well about having such outstanding and talented individuals join our faculty and staff!

Dr. Cord - Assistant Principal

I am honored to serve as Assistant Principal at Powdersville Middle School. This is the start of my 33rd year in Education. I previously taught all grade levels and subjects in Middle Schools in Arizona and Florida. I also served as an Assistant Principal at the high school level for five years. Interestingly enough I taught seven years at Powdersville Middle, seven years ago! It is my pleasure to return and serve once more in this amazing school.

I am happily married to my husband of 31 years and we have three children; all of whom were fortunate enough to be taught at Powdersville Middle. Two of them have graduated from Powdersville High School and have gone on to attend Arizona State University. The youngest is a Senior at PVHS this year. I look forward to assisting students, teachers, and parents alike. It is going to be a fantastic year as we have instituted many layers of support to ensure success for ALL students.

Tammie Collins - English Language Arts Lab

Miss Tammie Collins is coming home to PVMS this year after having retired in 2018. Since then, she has worked as a substitute teacher and the liaison for our Virtual Learning Academy during the 2020-2021 school year. Miss Collins is teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade ELA Lab classes. She is a proud University of South Carolina and Southern Wesleyan University alum, and she holds many certifications. Miss Collins enjoys spending time with her extended family, church friends, and colleagues, reading, and participating in church activities. She is an avid platelet donor. Miss Collins is beyond excited to be back home teaching at PVMS.

Treva Davis - English Language Arts

My name is Treva Davis and I am originally from Greenville, SC. I received my BS in Education from Appalachian State University, my Masters in Ed Leadership and Supervision from Furman University, and am a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescent Generalist. I taught almost 30 years in several upstate school districts, but my home is Anderson One. After being retired for four years, I realized I was not completely finished with teaching and returned to PVMS for the 2022-2023 school year. Spending time with my husband, our two grown children, and seven grandchildren, gardening, reading, travelling, and taking LOTS of pictures takes up any spare time I may have.

Jennie Farmer - Pre-Algebra and English Language Arts Lab

Dr. Jennie Farmer has been in education for 22 years. She has a B.A. in Special Education, M.A. in Gifted Education, and Ph.D. in Special Education and in Educational Measurement and Evaluation. She began her career teaching middle school in Florida. After completing her Ph.D., she was an assistant professor in the College of Education at Clemson University for six years. She missed teaching middle school so much she returned to the classroom in 2017 in Greenville County. Dr. Farmer is very excited to join PVMS this year as an 8th grade teacher. She continues to teach for the Wilbur O. and Anne Powers College of Business at Clemson each fall. She and her husband have three young children and two dogs. Her older two children attend Concrete Primary School, and her youngest attends Greenville Technical College's Child Development Center. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with her family, cooking, and reading.

Sharon Huff - English Language Arts & English 1 Honors

I am Sharon Huff, and this is my first year teaching at Powdersville Middle School. Prior to coming to PVMS I worked as an English teacher in grades eight through twelve. I taught eighth grade ELA at Pickens Middle School and all levels of English 1 through English 4 at Lugoff-Elgin High School. Most recently, I had the opportunity to work in school and district administration in the School District of Pickens County where I served as the principal of Daniel High School (2005-2012) and as the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services (2012-2022). I loved my time in these roles, but my heart has always been with students in the classroom. I decided to retire in June 2022 and join the PVMS team so that I can enjoy working directly with students again. This year I'm teaching 8th grade ELA and English 1 Honors. I have loved getting to know the awesome PVMS family. I have been so impressed by the students and the PVMS team. My background includes attending Clemson University where I earned my BA degree in Secondary Education (English). Even though I'm a Tiger fan, I earned my M.Ed. in Education Leadership from the University of SC. I also worked on an advanced degree in Education Leadership at Nova Southeastern University. I have been married to Andrew Huff for thirty-two years, and we have two adult children. Within the next year, both of my children are getting married, so right now, wedding planning is one of my favorite "hobbies." Otherwise, I enjoy spending time traveling, camping, and kayaking with my family and our two Boykin Spaniels.

Mary O'Shields -

Hi, I’m Mary O’Shields. I am a product of Anderson One as a graduate of Wren High School. I have spent the last 7 years working at Powdersville Elementary in Special Education. This will be my 8th year and I feel so incredibly Blessed to be starting it here at Powdersville Middle School, I am so fortunate to now work in the community I grew up in. I am married to my high school sweetheart, we have 2 children who also attend Powdersville Schools. GO PATRIOTS! As a family we are very active in our church and with our youth group there. We stay busy watching our kids play sports for the schools and enjoy being apart of this Powdersville community.

Ashley Weaver - Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 Honors

Hello! I'm Ashley Weaver. This is my 14th year teaching middle level math and I'm so excited to be at Powdersville Middle, where I attended middle school myself! I have a Bachelor's degree in middle level math education, two Master's degrees (in teacher leadership and secondary math education), and will complete my Doctorate in curriculum and assessment this fall. I am also National Board Certified. My husband, Grady, teaches at Powdersville High School and we have a four-year-old daughter, Madison, and an 11-year-old lab mix named Hank. In my spare time when I'm not spending time with my family, I am an avid reader and try to read at least one book per week. I am thrilled to be back home in Anderson 1 and can't wait to see what this school year has in store!

Crystal Whiteside - LDSC

Hello! I am so glad to be teaching at PVMS. Prior to teaching here, I taught for 15 years at Berea HS. I have taught special needs my whole career and wouldn’t want to teach anything else. I have 2 daughters, a boxer and husband who keep me very busy. I am originally from NJ, but have stayed down South since college. I have a BA in Special Education and a MS in Instructional Tech.

Here is the list of the students who have ordered a yearbook already this year, just in case you can't remember. This will be the link all year but will update! This list is also on the school Google Classroom updated frequently.

The early-bird purchase price for this full color, 90+ page yearbook is $40 through September 16, 2022. This is also the last day to get free icons with your personalization of $7. Gift Cards for Field Trips!

We anticipate being able to offer field trips this year! PVMS offers the opportunity to purchase gift cards as a great way to earn credit for your child’s school field trips and to help PVMS reach its goals for school improvement! Every gift card you purchase gives you 100% of the purchase value in addition to a designated credit percentage (80% of profit) towards your child’s trip and a designated percentage (20% of profit) towards the school's improvement goals. This program has paid the entire field trip cost for many of our students and their parents in past years. Consistency is the key! Don’t buy gas without gift cards! Ingles and WalMart/Sam’s Club give discounts on gas if you buy with gift cards! Don’t buy groceries, eat out, or go to the movies without gift cards! Don’t buy birthday, wedding, or shower gifts without gift cards! Don’t do home improvements or purchase appliances without gift cards! Definitely don’t go shopping without gift cards! Encourage relatives, neighbors, and co-workers to order gift cards in your child’s name.

There are many gift cards available through our online ordering. To get started, go to Our group ID is 864269PMS. It is best to use your child’s name when you register as a new user.

  • We typically place our school order for gift cards on Wednesday morning. In most cases, gift cards will be ready for pick-up (or to give your child) by Thursday afternoon of each week.

  • We are not able to accept postdated checks.

  • A record is kept of your child’s credit through our online software. A record of your credit may be requested through e-mail (

  • We are not able to exchange gift cards after they have been picked up or sent home by your child. Please check your written or online order carefully before submitting. If we make a mistake in filling your order, we will be glad to make the necessary correction. We keep order forms on file for verification.

  • Plan ahead for what you will need for holidays. Filling orders the week before holidays is very challenging and availability is not guaranteed. Order early to ensure that you get what you need!

Lost and Found

Even though we have just started school, there are quite a few lunch boxes and water bottles in our Lost & Found! We even have some glasses and other odds and ends. I encourage you to put your child's name on all personal items being brought to school. If your child's name is on the item, we will do our best to return the item to your child. Every few months, we donate unclaimed items. Please remind your child to check the Lost & Found.
