Priority Open Enrollment 23-24
Open Enrollment is underway for the 2023– 2024 school year. Through Open Enrollment, your child has the opportunity to attend any school of their choice, if capacity permits. If you currently have an 8th grader that will be attending Mountain Ridge High School next year and Mountain Ridge is not your home school, you need to apply for open enrollment by December 05, 2022 for priority consideration. If you have another student starting school next year in any grade and your current student is on open enrollment, you should also apply by December 2022. Priority will be given to siblings of currently enrolled students if grade level capacity permits. You must apply online at dvusd.org/openenrollment. It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment for currently enrolled students at Sierra Verde, only new students wishing to attend.
For those of you with family, friends, or neighbors looking to attend SV next year, it is essential that you get an application ASAP and prior to the the closing of our priority window. In most grades, we typically have to waitlist most students if they apply after December.
Families will be notified if the application has been approved or denied via email in January 2023. Upon notification, a registration must be completed online, no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student potentially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply.
If you have any questions, please contact the front office at 623-376-4800.

Volunteer of the Week ~Amber Diebell~
Amber is a first time board member this year of the PTSO, helping out as the secretary and enjoys volunteering in her son's classrooms. She has two sons here at Sierra Verde, Jax is in Ms. Perry's second grade class and Cash is in Mrs. Englerth's kindergarten class. Amber is a Realtor with Howe Realty and when she isn't working on helping people find their dream homes, you can find her hiking, paddle boarding or just generally exploring all the beauty that is Arizona with her husband, Jeremy and two boys. Thank you for all of your hard work at SV, Amber!!

Standards Based Mindset at Sierra Verde
Sierra Verde is aligned to the DVUSD Standards-based mindset, which helps guide our staff in tracking and reporting academic performance related to the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.
Students are expected to complete daily practice assignments/homework to reinforce skills and concepts learned in class. In-process learning assignments will be factored into a student’s final grade, but will only count for 1% of the entire grade. Daily assignments are essential in developing the skills and knowledge in order to excel on the summative assessments. Assessments will be 99% of a student’s final grade. There will be no opportunities for extra credit. Grades take into consideration mastery of standards and skill development. All grades are supported by appropriate documentation (e.g., anecdotal notes, work samples, checklists, portfolios, rubrics, projects, tests, performance assessments, etc.). The grade a student receives on any assignment will reflect an accurate assessment of the student’s performance on the assessment. No individual test, performance assessment, assignment, or project should be more than 25% of the total grade.
It is absolutely imperative that students keep up with classwork, daily assignments and discussions in order to fully comprehend and grasp the material. These in-process learning assignments directly impact student performance on assessments. A standards-based mindset also embraces allowing students opportunities to show learning through reassessment when appropriate.
We will continue to provide updates and clarification throughout the year regarding these best-practices for grading and reporting on student learning. We are proud of the work our students, staff, and administration are doing to align definitions of mastery and essential standards across our district, leading the state in proficiency and growth for all students in DVUSD.

Mindfulness Monday Challenge of the Week
"Our words have power. They impact others, but they also impact us." - Michael Hyatt
Do you have a "mantra"? maybe your mantra is "expect nothing, appreciate everything", or "positive mind, positive life". Maybe you remind yourself of your strengths each day by telling saying things like, "I am confident. I am successful. I am powerful. I am strong." Mantras like these have the power to motivate you to act on certain things, help you to concentrate on achieving your goals in life, give you the power to change your negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thinking patterns. Positive words have the power to change your life. They can recreate your world. When affirmations, or mantras, are repeated over and over again, they begin to take charge of your thoughts, slowly changing your pattern of thinking and ultimately changing your life. This week, notice the words you use to describe yourself. Are they kind? Are they helpful? Do they lift you up?
Challenge of the Week: Come up with 1 positive word that describes you or you wish you were more like. At the end of announcements shout, "I am ...." and your your word every day this week!
